Obsidian Guard Caste

MS 7746.94 · Practices and doctrines

“Caste is not a privilege; it is a functional designation, a set of operational parameters. The Guard Caste are the hinges of the door, not the ones who decide whether it should be opened.”

— Archon Valerius, Annotations on the Obsidian Decree, Spiral 47, Aperture 9

The Obsidian Guard Caste constitutes the heritable military and civil-administrative lineage within the Stratocracy of the Silent Citadel, eligibility for which is determined exclusively by direct patrilineal descent from one of the Forty-Seven Original Sword-Bearers. It is the sole source of commissioned officer personnel for the Obsidian Guard and maintains a closed, endogamous social structure as defined by Concordance 0 (Provisional).

Eligibility and Lineage

Membership is predicated on an unbroken, documented patriline tracing back to a Sword-Bearer present at the Ascent of the First Archon. The Caste Registry, maintained by the Office of Heraldic Verification (Floor 12,304, “The Vellum Vaults”), requires proof via notarized lineage scrolls, which are subject to annual audit. Notably, the criterion is purely genealogical; martial prowess or administrative acumen, while encouraged, are not prerequisites for caste status. This has been a point of contention, most famously in the treatise by Elara of the Dusted Stacks, who argued that genetic dilution over forty-seven generations rendered the distinctions “administratively nebulous.” Her petition for a merit-based review was filed and subsequently lost under Clause 22(b) of Concordance 117, pertaining to “Sedition of Category.”

Rights and Obligations

Caste membership confers the right to bear arms within the Citadel’s precincts, the right to hold dual military-civil appointments (such as Porter-Captain of a Given Spiral or Aperture Warden), and the right to display a primary Sigil on one’s personal standard. Obligations are extensive and include mandatory service rotations, adherence to caste-exclusive dietary and matrimonial codes, and the responsibility to provide one first-born son for cadet training at the Silent Citadel Academy by his sixteenth naming-day.

Interaction with Other Castes

The Caste operates within a rigid hierarchy outlined in the treatise Castes of the Citadel. It exists in a state of formal separation from the Artisan, Scribe, and Menial Castes. Inter-caste marriage is prohibited without invoking the Assumption of Merit, a process requiring a unanimous vote of the Caste Council and the Archon’s seal—an event recorded only eleven times in the extant chronicles. The Caste holds policing authority over all lower castes and maintains the right of summary judgment for infractions of caste law, though such judgments are often delegated to a Silent Porter for execution.

Heraldic and Operational Identity

Each lineage within the Caste is assigned a specific Sigil, as codified in the prologue to The Obsidian Decree. These twenty-seven primary sigils (e.g., The Sundered Shield, The Quill-Sword, The Locked Gate) denote operational specialties and command chains. A Guard-Caste individual’s full title incorporates their Sigil, their personal name, and their current appointment (e.g., “Ferran of the Quill-Sword, Porter-Captain of the Western Spiral”). Subordinate variant sigils denote cadet branches, whose members retain full caste rights but are ineligible for certain supreme commands reserved for primary lineages.

Contemporary Disputes and Anomalies

The closed nature of the Caste has led to several doctrinal crises. A significant ongoing dispute concerns the “Dilution Paradox”: as lineage branches proliferate, the theoretical pool of eligible officers expands, yet the number of active commissions remains fixed by the Decree, leading to a class of “Caste-In-Waiting” officers with full status but no post. Furthermore, the Caste’s authority is periodically challenged by incidents of “Caste-Slip,” wherein individuals perform duties reserved for the Guard Caste without possessing the requisite lineage. The most famous such incident involved a member of the Numerous Delegation who successfully commanded a watch-rotation for three cycles before the discrepancy was noted; the Obsidian Guard’s subsequent attempt to monitor the Delegation’s movements is documented in their operational logs as “Inconclusive.”

Scholarly Interpretation

There is no consensus on whether the Caste represents a military elite, a bureaucratic apparatus, or a custodial lineage for certain physical and doctrinal keys within the Tower. The Concordances are contradictory: Concordance 12 designates them “the living lock,” while Concordance 304 refers to them as “a regrettable administrative necessity.” What is universally accepted is that the Obsidian Guard Caste, through its control of the Obsidian Guard, functions as the operational spine of the Stratocracy, an entity whose own ontological status remains, like much in the Tower, catalogued but unresolved.
