Manual of Particulars
MS 6188.50 · Documents and ordinances
The Manual of Particulars is the foundational text of the School of Particulars, held in the Tower's catalogues under the dual designation Concordance Annex 47..19 and consulted in an unbroken if irregular sequence since its first collation on Floor 2288. It sets out the doctrine that no object, event, or floor may be described in general terms where a particular term is available, and that the description of any particular is the whole of the knowledge properly owed to it. The Manual is not a long document. It is, however, extremely specific, and the School maintains that no reader has yet finished it, on the grounds that each particular encountered in the course of reading generates a further particular requiring entry.
Structure and Contents
The Manual is divided into nine articles, each headed by a statement of principle and followed by an unbounded appendix of worked instances. The articles proceed from the general prohibition on abstraction (Article I) through the classification of edges, wear, residue, occlusion, and delay, and conclude with Article IX, which consists entirely of the single sentence: Continue.
Article IV, on the admissibility of evidence drawn from surfaces the observer has not touched, is the most cited and the least agreed upon. The Manual of Transcription Standards reproduces Article IV in full but annotates it against the practice of the School of Particulars, which has adopted readings of the article that its own annotators describe as "generous to the point of estrangement."
Relation to the Litany
The Manual is the doctrinal source; the Litany of Perceived Particulars is its instrument. Where the Manual instructs the reader what to notice, the Litany supplies the standardized incantatory formulary by which what has been noticed may be articulated and submitted. In practice a descent-party proceeds by the Litany, and the resulting Proposed Descent Particulars are then tested against the Manual's articles before reaching the Warden of Descent, who holds Approval Authority over all such submissions. Form 1747-Ω is filed after the Litany's initial application and before Manual review; the School's own procedural memoranda refer to this interval as "the useful silence."
Scholars of the Schism of the Blotted Line note that the Manual predates the Schism by an unknown but considerable margin, and that the School of Particulars formed around it rather than the reverse. The Seven Strictures of the Particular are widely believed to be a condensation of the Manual's nine articles into seven, though the arithmetic has never been satisfactorily explained and Eloise of the Granular Insight declined, on record, to attempt it.
Later Manuals and Derivative Works
The Manual of Particulars is the first of the Tower's great procedural manuals and the parent of a substantial literature. The Manual of Resonant Integration, the Manual of Silent Procedure, and the Manual of Contradictory Protocols each acknowledge it in their preambles, though with markedly different degrees of warmth. The Manual of Phantasmal Bookkeeping borrows its evidentiary standard wholesale; disputes before the School of Particulars are still frequently settled by invoking the Bookkeeping's glosses on the Manual rather than the Manual itself, a habit the Manual of Cascading Validation has described as "citation at one remove."
The relationship to Absorptive Theorythe Manual is contested. The absorptivists maintain that the Manual's appendix structure anticipates their central claim; the School maintains that an appendix of worked instances is an appendix of worked instances, and that the absorptivists are reading the table of contents as doctrine.
Textual Transmission and the Lens
The surviving witnesses to the Manual fall into three families: the upright folios, the compressed spools, and a single badly water-damaged floor-copy recovered from Floor 4102. The compressed witness is held on the Spool of Endless Provisos, whose minuscule glyphic notation cannot be read without a Lens of Minute Particulars. Consequently every collation of the Manual across the last four centuries has depended on the availability of a Lens, and the Tower's Lens allotments — administered under an unnumbered appendix to Concordance Annex 47..19 — have quietly shaped the received text.
The School of Particulars has long objected to this dependency, and its advocacy before the Archives' tripartite review process for acquisition has centred on widening Lens access rather than on producing fresh transcriptions. The Taxonomy of Imperfect Duplicates records forty-one variants of Article VI alone, of which eleven are certified duplicates of one another and thus of no interest to anyone.
Contradictions and Scholarly Dispute
Two disputes recur. The first concerns the Manual's status as annex. Concordance 47. states plainly that the Manual was annexed to the 47 series at its collation and is therefore subordinate to the Concordance in all matters of interpretation. Concordance 47..19 itself, however, is titled Manual of Particulars and contains no annexure clause, and the Manual of Contradictory Protocols cites this omission as its principal worked example of a document that contradicts its own filing.
The second dispute concerns the Manual's ninth article. A minority reading, advanced in the Manual of Resonant Dampening and repeated in several floor inventories, holds that Continue is a scribal direction rather than a doctrinal statement, and that the Manual is therefore properly an eight-article work. The School of Particulars rejects this on the grounds that a reader who is told to continue has been told something, and that a thing told is a particular.
"Ask not what the object is in general. Ask what it is here, at this edge, in this light, at this hour, having been dropped."

Access
The Manual is not held on open shelves. Certified readers may consult the upright folios on Floor 2288 between the third and seventh bells; the compressed witness requires a Lens appointment submitted a minimum of forty-one days in advance; the water-damaged floor-copy is shown to no one, but is periodically weighed, and its weight is recorded in the Manual Porterage ledgers to the fourth decimal place. The School's position is that these restrictions are themselves particulars and should be catalogued as such.
