Lost Concordance Faction

MS 9065.07 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Lost Concordance Faction was a temporary administrative body convened from 892–899 A.S. (After Shelving) to adjudicate the status of The Fifth Concordance following the disputed discovery of The Lost Chapter of the Unwritten Concordance. Its primary mandate was to determine whether the newly discovered document constituted a legitimate part of the Concordance sequence, thereby potentially rendering the Fifth Concordance obsolete or requiring its reclassification.

The Faction’s formation was authorized under the emergency provisions of Concordance 37, Clause 81.2—the same clause that had formally dissolved the Strictconstructionist Faction—creating a procedural paradox that was never fully resolved. It consisted of seven senior Librarians, drawn from both the Scriptorium of Lost Roots and the Scriptorium of Lost Causes, though its deliberations were frequently boycotted by the latter, who argued the matter fell under their purview as a “lost cause” in potentia.

Formation and Mandate

The Faction was convened by direct order of the Chief Archivist following the authentication of the Lost Chapter by the Archive of Lost Protocols on Floor 404. The Chapter’s content, which appeared to outline a system of governance predating the Fourth Concordance, presented a direct challenge to the foundational authority of the Fifth. The Faction’s official mandate, as recorded in its charter, was to “assess the documentary integrity, sequential precedence, and administrative implications of the artifact designated ‘The Lost Chapter of the Unwritten Concordance,’ and to deliver a binding recommendation for its cataloguing.”

Its working chambers were established in a disused auxiliary reading room adjacent to the Antechamber of Lost Intent, a location chosen for its purported neutrality, though scholars from the Purist Faction later contended the proximity influenced the Faction’s eventual findings.

Core Deliberations and Internal Schism

The Faction’s work was immediately hampered by fundamental disagreement over methodology. A minority bloc, led by Elara of the Receding Point, advocated for the application of Echo Theory, arguing the Lost Chapter was not a discrete document but a resonant “echo” of legislative intent from a prior, uncatalogued cycle of the Tower, and thus held advisory but not statutory power. The majority, however, pursued a strict textual analysis.

The central point of contention arose from a single, cryptic sub-clause within the Lost Chapter that referenced “the governance of absences.” The Faction spent fourteen months debating whether this referred to the administrative handling of lost items (suggesting a link to the Archive of Lost Conversation and Lost Sensations Archive) or to a more abstract doctrine concerning the authority of documents that are not present. This debate precipitated the Faction’s only internal schism, resulting in the temporary secession of two members who formed the short-lived “Doctrinal Absentee” splinter group.

The Omega Annex Recommendation

After seven years of deliberation, the Faction issued its final recommendation, a 3,000-page report now held in the Vault of Lost Causes pending final deposition. Its core conclusion was that the Lost Chapter was neither a successor nor a predecessor to the Fifth Concordance, but a “lateral doctrinal instance.” The Faction proposed the creation of a new annex to the Fifth Concordance—designated Annex Omega—to house the Chapter’s rulings as “complementary, non-sequential guidelines.”

This proposal directly referenced and sought to resolve the longstanding scholarly dispute regarding the relationship between Annex Omega of the Twenty-Ninth Concordance and the Lost Appendix of the Ninth Concordance. In effect, the Faction argued for a standardized system for attaching anomalous, temporally-displaced documents to the main Concordance body without altering its numbered sequence.

Dissolution and Legacy

The Faction was formally dissolved in 899 A.S. upon the delivery of its report. Its recommendation was ratified by the Chief Archivist, but the implementation was delayed indefinitely due to protests from the Verificationist faction, who argued the Faction had overstepped its mandate by proposing new administrative structures. The Lost Chapter remains in a state of procedural limbo, physically stored in Sub-annex 7b of the Archive of Lost Protocols under a Chronostatic Field, while its proposed Annex Omega exists only as a cross-referenced stub in the auxiliary catalogues.

The primary legacy of the Lost Concordance Faction is the precedent it set for the handling of foundational textual anomalies. Its rigorous, if ultimately inconclusive, methodology is still cited in disputes involving the Lost Catalogue of Negative Space and the taxonomy of the Lost Annexes of the Third. Furthermore, the Faction’s extensive records provided key evidence for the Report of the Commission on Lost Phenomena, particularly regarding the classification of documents that legislate their own obscurity.
