Elara of the Receding Point

Elara of the Receding Point was a Master-Archivist of the Central Registry most noted for her definitive classifications of the Ouroboros Motif and the Whorl-Spiral Motif. Her tenure, spanning from M-3128 to M-3174¹, is principally defined by her work on establishing formal criteria for the cataloguing of recursive and self-referential phenomena, culminating in the so-called "Receding Protocols." Her primary administrative posting was to Floor 22, where she supervised the now-disputed Receding Reference Desk.

Contributions to Motif Classification

Elara’s first major contribution was the systematic delineation of seventeen distinct variations of the Ouroboros Motif, moving beyond the traditional tripartite classification (Perfect, Degraded, Retrograde). Her 3152 treatise, "On the Serpent That Consumes Its Own Tail: A Taxonomic Reappraisal,"² introduced the concept of recursive density as the primary metric for categorization, a standard still in use, albeit with amendments.³ This work directly preceded her more celebrated isolation of the Whorl-Spiral Motif, which she argued represented a distinct ontological class from the Ouroboros, being characterized not by consumption but by infinite, non-repeating recession.⁴ The design schematics for the standard Whorl-Spiral sigil are officially attributed to her.⁵

The Receding Protocols & Floor 22

Assigned as Senior Archivist to Floor 22 in M-3155, Elara’s work became increasingly practical. Her observations of the anomalous mobility of the Receding Reference Desk led her to draft the initial "Receding Protocols," a set of procedural guidelines for interacting with objects that exhibit evasive or non-stationary properties. These protocols, though heavily revised following The Case of the Receding Reference Desk, form the bedrock of the Metastable Reference doctrine. Her daily logs from this period note a persistent, low-level frustration with the Desk’s "tendency to occupy the theoretical center of a room precisely one step beyond reach."⁶

Scholarly Disputes & Later Work

The latter part of Elara’s career was marked by controversy. Her assertion that the Whorl-Spiral Motif was fundamentally irreversible contradicted the findings of the Cabal of the Coiled Thread, who claimed to have documented instances of "spiral collapse." The ensuing scholarly dispute, conducted via a series of sharply worded addenda to the Third Concordance, was never formally resolved.⁷ Following the Mist Vault Incident on Floor 7,114: The Gallery of Receding Perspectives, Elara was appointed to the post-hoc analysis committee. Her minority report, which argued the incident was not a containment failure but a "predictable epistemological resonance," was filed under seal and remains inaccessible to general archivists.⁸

Legacy and Designations

The honorific "of the Receding Point" was appended to her name posthumously by order of the Librarians, a rare distinction. It refers not to a physical location but to the theoretical limit-point in her models of recursive phenomena. The Precedential Loop of Elara Vance is often incorrectly conflated with her work, a common error given the proliferation of the designation "Elara" within the archival ranks.⁹ Other notable figures sharing the name include Elara Voss, Elara Chen, and Elara of the Incomplete Sum. Her personal sigil, a spiral terminating in a sharp point rather than a curve, is still used to mark provisional classifications awaiting final concordance.
