Sublateralist Faction

MS 5626.35 · Guilds, orders and offices

Sublateralist Faction is a body within the Functionalist School that maintains a perfectly closed, self-sustaining functional loop constitutes a valid form of existence, irrespective of any external referent or catalogued antecedent. The Faction has been administratively present on Floors 112, 299, and 884 since its first recorded recension under Concordance XII, Annex 3, and remains among the more quietly contentious interpreters of functional ontology in the Tower.

Origins and Early Recension

The Sublateralist Faction emerged from a marginal note entered by Clerk Hestor Vane of the Scriptorium of the Lower Spiral in the 119th cycling of the Cataloguer's Schism of Floor 299, wherein Vane observed that a sealed inventory which referenced only itself had, by continual consultation, acquired the weight of a held subject. The note was later elevated to a position by the Traditionalist Bloc, then opposed by the Strictconstructionist Faction on the grounds that self-reference violated the Primary Concordance's definitional aperture. The resulting dispute was settled by Concordance 37, Clause 81.2, under which the Strictconstructionist Faction was formally dissolved; the Sublateralists thereafter occupied the vacated stall on Floor 299.

"A loop that sustains its own citation requires no outside door; the door is the loop, and the loop is the floor."

— Hestor Vane, Marginalia on the Lower Spiral, Folio 12

Doctrine of the Closed Loop

The central claim of the Sublateralist Faction is that any functional sequence which returns to its origin without depletion of record qualifies as existent within the meaning of the Functionalist School's founding ordinance. This position places the Faction in partial alignment with the Stasis Faction, though the Sublateralists reject the latter's requirement of inertial stillness. It also diverges from the Purist Faction, which advocated for the uncritical acceptance of all submissions, in that Sublateralists accept only those submissions that terminate within themselves.

A practical instance arose in the Winter of the 402nd cycling, when the Substantialist office submitted a ledger that cited only its own appendix. The Verificationists, then led by Selena Moss, declined to verify it; the Sublateralists entered it as a valid closed loop and housed it in the Annex of Self-Returning Folios. The Lost Concordance Faction later argued the housing breached Concordance IX's foundational clause, a claim the Sublateralists answered by invoking the Lost Concordance Faction's own doctrine of implicit immunity.

Disputes with Adjacent Bodies

The Faction's relationship with the Plexocentric faction has remained cool since the 511th cycling, when the Plexocentric teaching that the center of any informational sphere shifts with observation was held by Sublateralist Clerk Mire Adept Cald to be incompatible with a loop possessing a fixed return. The Provenance Faction of the Calx School has likewise disputed Sublateralist use of calx impressions left by closed loops, holding calx to be a passive record of interaction rather than a generative seal.

Matters were further complicated when the Absolute Purists petitioned the Third Concordance to declare all closed loops null under the doctrine of the Absolutist Faction, which maintained that repealed clauses were null, void, and invisible for operational purposes. The petition was denied on the ground that Concordance 37 remained un-repealed, a point the Ultra-Progressionists noted with satisfaction.

Administrative Status and Holdings

The Sublateralist Faction is presently lodged on Floor 884 in the Hall of Returning Apertures, with a secondary scriptorium on Floor 112 maintained by the Purist Scribes for cross-copying of loop records. Its holdings include 4,012 sealed inventories, each cited exclusively by its own clause. Visitors to the Floor 884 scriptorium are prohibited from opening windows, as drafts are held to disturb the closure of the loops.

Scholarly Disagreement

A continuing disagreement concerns whether a loop that is amended by the Bottom-Up Faction ceases to be closed. The Transcendentalist Archivists hold that amendment from below breaks the return; the Sublateralists counter that any amendment generated within the loop is the loop. The Staticist office has refused to adjudicate, citing the Second Recension of the Spiral as silent on the point. The Alpha Purists have entered a dissenting folio, preserved in the Annex of Self-Returning Folios, arguing that uncritical acceptance by the broader Purist Faction does not extend to self-sealing documents.
