Location
MS 9114.34 · Practices and doctrines
Location, within the The Tower, denotes the system by which the presence and identity of an entity or holding is ascribed to a specific spatial, temporal, and conceptual coordinate. It is distinct from simple placement, being a dynamic, often contested, state of being situated. Governed by the Ordinance of Situatedness (Concordance 114.7.a), Location is a prerequisite for all archival operations, as an unlocated entity cannot be catalogued, retrieved, or reliably acknowledged.
Components of a Formal Location
A Formal Location requires the resolution of three interdependent axes:
- Spatial: The physical or abstract point of residence, often expressed as a floor number, Aperture Markings, or a designated Fixed Geospatial Anchors. Discrepancies in spatial location are addressed by the Bureau of Displaced Holdings.
- Temporal: The moment of archival validation. Temporal location is not always synchronous with external timekeeping and is subject to Stasis Quarantine procedures when anomalies are detected.
- Conceptual: The position within a relevant taxonomy or index. This axis determines an entity's relationship to other holdings and is managed by the Guild of Primary Cataloguers using frameworks such as Oneiric Taxonomies and Paradoxical Cartography.
Methods of Determination
The Tower employs several methodologies to ascertain Location, often simultaneously.
- Conceptual Echo-Location
- A navigational technique that pinpoints entities by their unique conceptual resonance, or 'harmonics signature'. Essential for locating abstract or non-corporeal holdings.
- Provisional Cartography
- As practiced by the Lateral Annex, this method assigns a temporary, operational location to entities whose permanent coordinates are indeterminate, pending further investigation or the resolution of contradictory evidence.
- Archive Reckoning
- The standard system for logging and cross-referencing every location event, creating an immutable (though often retrospectively amended) chain of custodial custody.
Challenges and Anomalies
Location is not an inherent property but an ascribed status, leading to numerous administrative complexities.
- Simultaneous Location:]] The condition where a single entity is verified to exist in two or more discrete locations at once. Governed by Clause Omega-7, such instances are referred to the Index of Irreconcilables for containment.
- Conceptual Motility:]] The tendency of certain concepts to shift their conceptual location, requiring dynamic re-indexing. This is a primary function of the Desk of Lateral Correspondence.
- The Omega Discrepancy: Permanently documented on Spiral Staircase Omega, this is the archetypal case of a location that cannot be reconciled with any known map of the Tower, yet is persistently reported by expeditions.
- Unlocation: The most severe classification, applied to entities that have been verified to exist but for which all three axes of location have collapsed or become incoherent. Unlocated entities are administratively treated as if they do not exist, though their potential for spontaneous relocation is a constant procedural concern.
Authoritative Sources and Disputes
The primacy of a Location claim is adjudicated by citation of the Concordances. Key ordinances include:
- Concordance 22 (The Decree of First Encounter): Establishes that the location at which an entity is first formally observed by a Librarian is its primary spatial anchor, barring evidence of pre-existing habitation.
- Concordance 89 (On Transitory Holdings): Distinguishes between a holding's current location and its permanent placement, a distinction central to the operations of the Immovable Annex.
- Concordance 203 (Counter-Claims of Situatedness): Provides the framework for resolving disputes when two departments assert exclusive location over the same entity, typically resulting in the creation of a duplicate holding or, in extreme cases, a new annex.
Scholarly debate is fiercest regarding the ontological priority of the axes. The Spatially Primacist school, citing Concordance 22, argues that spatial fixation is foundational. The Conceptual Integrists, whose views are reflected in the practices of Conceptual Echo-Location, maintain that conceptual location generates the conditions for spatial and temporal manifestation. The ongoing construction of the Breathing Corridor, whose dimensions change according to the conceptual weight of its contents, is often cited as evidence for the latter.
Administrative Consequences
A resolved Location dictates an entity's archival journey. It determines the applicable Property Extraction protocols, its eligibility for transfer to the Vault of Ambiguous Provenance, and its routing for Intake. Ultimately, Location is the mechanism by which the Tower imposes order upon the fundamentally placeless nature of the subjects it archives, a continuous and imperfect process described in the Whisper Appendix to Concordance 1 as "the necessary fiction of here."
