Shelf-Mark 77Θ

MS 5131.40 · Places and structures

Shelf-Mark 77Θ is a location in the Delta Wing whose official coordinate string — D-W/77Θ//nil-nil — was ruled "spatially improbable" by the Office of Coordinate Integrity in the winter of the year recorded as 6,142 by the Long Reckoning. The ruling has never been rescinded. The location remains in use.

77Θ is not, strictly, a shelf. It is a stretch of flooring approximately four metres by one, bounded on three sides by masonry and on the fourth by nothing that can be measured. Materials placed there are catalogued normally, shelved normally, and retrieved normally by anyone who walks in at the ordinary height. They are also, according to every survey instrument the Office has sent, not there at all.

Discovery and the First Survey

The mark was opened during the routine re-lettering of the Delta Wing's eastern alcoves, a project begun under Concordance 2,208 and abandoned, as is customary, under Concordance 2,214. The re-lettering team, led by the then–Second Surveyor Halvet Orrunce, noted that the coordinate assignation for the new 77Θ returned a position outside the Wing's own plan while simultaneously returning a position inside it. Orrunce's field note is preserved in the Delta Wing Survey Book, folio 61:

"The string reads as a place. The place reads as a string. I have walked it twice and my boots are dry."

— Halvet Orrunce, Delta Wing Survey Book, folio 61

The Office of Coordinate Integrity deliberated for nine sessions before issuing the improbability ruling, which had the practical effect of exempting 77Θ from the Wing's load-bearing calculations. It has since been exempted from eleven further calculations, none of which anyone has thought to list.

The Tenancy Dispute

In the year 6,159 a Librarian-Provisional assigned a Provisional Shelf-Mark to a crate of unexamined brass fittings recovered from a stairwell and directed that it be held at 77Θ pending triage. The crate did not arrive. It was nonetheless recorded as arrived, triaged, and returned to the Vestibule of Provisional Tenancy, and the register at Floor 412 shows all three events with correct times.

This should have ended the matter. Instead it produced the dispute now known as the Affair of the Absent Crate, in which the Kestrel Annex was read — by the Bureau of Tenure — to confer perpetual shelf tenure on items bearing a Provisional Shelf-Mark, including items that had never been physically shelved. The Bureau's position was that tenure attaches to the mark and not to the wood. The opposing reading, advanced by the Clerks' Conciliar and never formally withdrawn, holds that a shelf-mark with no shelf is a Mark without a subject and therefore void. No resolution was reached. The crate has since been recorded at 77Θ on four separate occasions, in four different years, by four different clerks, each of whom reports finding it there and none of whom has produced it.

The Motif of the Unnumbered Shelf is sometimes adduced in these arguments, on the grounds that a location which cannot be numbered spatially resembles a shelving unit which was never assigned a shelf-mark. The Canonist Assembly has ruled this comparison inexact on three occasions and has declined to say why.

Scholarly Disagreement

Whether 77Θ is one location or a class of locations is unresolved. The Third Concordance, Annex 9, treats it as singular — "the position styled 77Θ, and no other." The Fifth Concordance, Annex 2, treats it as a designation that may be re-instantiated wherever the coordinate string recurs, which is to say, in principle, anywhere. The Fifth's reading would make 77Θ a kind of precedent rather than a place, and the Office of Coordinate Integrity has refused to survey on that basis, calling the question "not ours."

A third position, maintained chiefly by the Keeper of the Delta Wing and supported by nothing but long experience, is that 77Θ is singular but moves. The Keeper's annual returns have logged the location at nine different offsets from its original position over some four hundred years, a drift of roughly one hand's breadth per decade. The Office has declined to plot the drift, on the grounds that plotting it would concede that the position had a trajectory, and a trajectory is a kind of string.

Access and Practice

77Θ may be entered from the eastern alcove corridor by anyone holding a reading token for the Delta Wing. Visitors are asked to leave the door open. The location is not lit and has never been lit; the Lamp Office maintains that a fitting was installed there in 6,088 and removed in 6,091 for reasons recorded as "positional." Readers who require light are directed to Shelf-Mark 77Θ-A, which is adjacent in the register and, by every available survey, three floors away.

Retrieval from 77Θ follows the ordinary Delta Wing procedure, with the single exception that retrievals must be logged before they are made rather than after. The Ordinance-Resolver Mark VII returns an error when asked to compute the location's distance from any other point in the Delta Wing, and the error has been left in place since the Resolver's installation because the alternative was to teach it to guess.

Records

The Record of Emergency, designated Shelf-Mark Q.891.05 in the Third Concordance annexes, contains the only surviving account of the winter of 6,142 in which the improbability ruling was issued, and it names 77Θ twice without explaining why. The Master Shelf Coordinate List still carries the improbable string in its original form, uncorrected, with a single marginal note in a hand nobody has identified: holds.

The Correspondents of the Empty Shelf have petitioned four times for 77Θ to be formally renamed, arguing that a shelf-mark should mark a shelf. The petitions have been received, numbered, and shelved.
