Intuitionist Guild

Designation and standing
Intuitionist Guild is the registered designation for a body of cataloguers, archivists, and ancillary personnel recognized by the Registry of Recognized Bodies under entry 7-Alpha of the Third Recension. It should not be confused with the Intuitionist School, the Intuitionist Sect, or the loose federation of practitioners described in the Apophansis commentaries, although all four bodies are frequently described in correspondence as "the Intuitionists," and the Guild has declined on eleven recorded occasions to clarify which of them a given letter was addressed to.
The distinction matters chiefly in matters of levy. The Guild holds a charter of assessment, the Sect does not, and the School holds a charter that it has never once invoked. A catalogue entry attributed to "the Intuitionists" without further specification is presumed, for fiscal purposes, to belong to the Guild.
Formation on the Progressive Cartography floors
The Guild was constituted out of the dispute over corridor B-19, which had occupied the floors of the Progressive Cartography School for the better part of a decade. When the Foundationalist School accepted the Intuitionist affirmation of the corridor's existence as a temporary expedient, the question of who would administer the corridor's holdings became pressing, and the answer — that no body existed with authority to do so — was resolved by inventing one.
The founding instrument, the Instrument of the Forty-Eighth Landing, was signed in the winter of Year 391 by nineteen cataloguers and one stonemason, the latter present in error and retained thereafter as a voting member. The Guild's first meeting adjourned without fixing a quorum, a condition it has never since remedied and which has never since presented an obstacle.
Early relations with the Vowed Librarians of Silence were poor. The Librarians held that the Guild's method — recognition over measurement — was a noisy intrusion upon the Tower's inherent order, and they made this view known by refusing to stamp any Guild transfer for a period of four years. The Guild responded by continuing to transfer holdings without stamps. When the matter was eventually brought before the Exegetical School of Primary Essence, that body ruled the Guild's practice irregular but already accomplished, and the ruling is cited by the Guild to this day as vindication.
Method: the interval and the recognition
Guild practice follows the Concordance of Intervals, which prescribes the time an item must be held before its recognition may be entered. The intervals are graduated: forty days for holdings of the third order, one hundred and twelve for the second, and — for holdings of the first order — an interval the Concordance declines to fix, on the grounds that first-order holdings are recognized instantaneously or not at all, and that to specify a duration would be to admit the possibility of a slow recognition, which the concordance's framers regarded as a contradiction.
In practice, Clerks of the Interval record the arrival and the recognition on separate slips, held together by a pin. Where the pin is lost the recognition is void and the item must be held again from the beginning. The Guild lost 1,204 pins in the flood year and has since required that pins be accounted for in the daily return.
"The pinning is the interval made visible. An unpinned recognition is a claim, not a record."
— Concordance of Intervals, Annex 3
Guild cataloguing of the Winged Anomalies by perceived internal consistency produced the standard fivefold division, and the Guild remains the only body competent to reassign a specimen between divisions. Reassignment requires the concurrence of two clerks, one of whom must not have seen the specimen.
The Aperture Sigma question
The Guild maintains a standing presence at Aperture Sigma, the disputed interstitial zone where Intuitionist influence is pervasive. Whether the Guild's Aperture station constitutes a floor, a landing, or an annex has never been settled, and the estimates of items held there differ by a factor of six depending on which assumption is applied. The station keeps two registers for this reason, one for each assumption, and neither is reconciled to the other.
The difficulty reached the Librarians in Year 409, when the Guild submitted a return listing 3,000 holdings at Aperture Sigma and the Intransigent Materialists submitted a counter-return listing 480. Both returns were accepted, under different clauses of the Concordant Law, and both remain on file. A request for clarification, filed by Clerk Adwena Ross in Year 412, has not been answered; Clerk Ross's subsequent memorandum, noting that "the Tower appears content to hold six hundred and twenty-five percent more than it has," was annotated in a second hand with the single word correct, which the Guild treats as the closest thing to a ruling it is likely to receive.
Disputes and the Guild's position on measurement
The Intransigent Materialists have petitioned for the condemnation of Guild entries under Clause 44 of the Concordant Law, arguing that the Guild's recognition standard fails for holdings of the first order, where no interval is fixed and no pin may be said to govern. The Guild's answer is that the objection confuses the record of recognition with the recognition, and that this confusion is the Materialist error generally.
Concordance 61, ratified in the winter of Year 388, recognized the methods of the Intuitionist School for holdings of the second and lower orders. The Guild reads Concordance 61 as applying to itself. The Librarians have not said otherwise, but neither have they said so, and the Guild's levy assessments after Year 388 have been computed on a reading of Concordance 61 that no other body endorses.
Administration
The Guild is governed by a Warden of the Register, chosen annually by the membership and, in eleven of the past fourteen years, chosen again the following year when no candidate could be found. Its current Warden is Murchison Adde, who holds the office provisionally. The Guild's records are kept on the Forty-Eighth Landing in a locked case with two keys, one held by the Warden and one by the stonemason's successor.
