Intrinsic Alphabetization

MS 3718.95 · Practices and doctrines

Intrinsic Alphabetization is an archival principle positing that the arrangement of records within a self-referencing system must, upon reaching a state of completion, reveal an inherent alphabetical order that was not intentionally imposed. It is most often invoked in debates concerning the cataloguing of Intrinsic subjects, particularly those related to the practices of Intrinsic Numeration and Intrinsic Silence.

“No shelf is arranged; it arrives.”
— Annals of Intrinsic Recovery, Addendum on Lexical Cohesion

The often-cited maxim summarizing the passive emergence of order under Intrinsic Alphabetization.

The principle is formally enshrined in Clause 19.7 of the Seventh Concordance, which states: “In any closed set of conceptual artifacts, the sequence of their ideational signatures will, upon final audit, conform to a non-arbitrary alphabetic progression, provided the set is complete.” This clause is foundational to the methodology of the School of Intrinsic Replication, which uses it to justify the rearrangement of archives post-acquisition to align with the “revealed order.”

Mechanism and Evidence

The mechanism of Intrinsic Alphabetization is described as a retroactive correction. A collection catalogued under random or pragmatic headings (e.g., by accession date, shelf stability, or clerk’s whim) is considered incomplete until such time as its internal conceptual linkages cause the physical or notational sequence of its titles to fall into a strict A-to-Z order. Proponents point to the Archive of Unspoken Prefaces on Floor Ξ-200, which, over a period of forty-seven years, gradually saw its 3,002 scrolls migrate across seventeen chambers until their call numbers spelled out a coherent, if cryptic, sentence. The Manual of Intrinsic Reclamation cites this as definitive proof of the principle in action.

Critics, notably the Committee for Photonic Authenticity, argue this is a classic case of observational bias. They contend that archivists, anticipating the principle, subconsciously manipulate placements over time, and that the “revealed order” is merely a post-hoc narrative applied to random data. The Committee’s Aperture 12 Report famously declared Intrinsic Alphabetization “a pleasing fiction, no more predictive than noting that all unshelved books are, by definition, on the floor.”

Interaction with Intrinsic Numeration

The relationship between Intrinsic Alphabetization and Intrinsic Numeration is complex and disputed. The Manifesto of Intrinsic Verity treats them as parallel processes: numeration deals with the essence of a holding (its floor number), while alphabetization deals with its relational identity (its position among peers). A holding achieving full Intrinsic Numeration is said to become “lexically inert,” immune to further alphabetic drift.

However, the Intrinsic Numeration Argument presents a counterpoint, suggesting that a truly complete alphabetical sequence would itself constitute a form of numeration, creating a paradox. If the ‘A’ item is defined by its position, and that position is defined by the ‘A’ item, the system collapses into a Class Θ: Intrinsic Contradiction. This theoretical instability is a primary reason why the Silentium Directive forbids the application of Intrinsic Alphabetization protocols to any holding already suspected of Intrinsic Silence.

The Dreyfus Continuum

The most practical application of the principle is the Dreyfus Continuum, a tool used by inventory clerks. It is a notational scale (D0 to D9) rating how “alphabetically resolved” a collection appears. A rating of D0 indicates total chaos; D9 indicates a perfect, stable A-Z sequence that has persisted for at least one full audit cycle. Collections rated D7 or above are often placed under Ontological Quarantine, as their perceived completeness is thought to risk conceptual collapse. The Verification of Intrinsic Coherence department routinely contests these quarantines, arguing that stability is not a pathology.

Scholarly Disputes and the Moderate Wing

The most significant schism concerns the unit of measurement. The Traditionalist Wing, led by the late Archivist Valerius, holds that the principle applies only to titles. The Reformist Wing, citing Annex 7-G of the Manual of Intrinsic Reclamation, argues it applies to the first substantive word within the text proper, leading to radically different shelf orders.

Aris Thorne, leader of the Moderate Wing within the School of Intrinsic Replication, proposes a compromise “Replication Threshold.” He argues a collection must achieve a D6 rating on the Dreyfus Continuum and show evidence of Intrinsic Dust generation before Intrinsic Alphabetization can be officially certified. This has slowed the certification process considerably, much to the annoyance of the Traditionalists, who see it as bureaucratic obstruction. Thorne’s position is detailed in his treatise, “On the Languid Arrival of Order,” which is itself filed under ‘O’ in direct defiance of Reformist filing conventions.

Current Status and Protocols

Per current directive (Seventh Concordance, Clause 19.7, Amendment Delta), all newly established collections on Floors with prime-numbered designations must be initially shelved in reverse-alphabetical order (Z-A) to “stimulate” the intrinsic process. The efficacy of this is hotly debated. Collections found to have achieved spontaneous Intrinsic Alphabetization are subject to a full Verification of Intrinsic Coherence audit, and their finding is recorded in the Annals of Intrinsic Recovery. To date, 1,447 collections have undergone this process, with 213 receiving full certification. The rest remain in a state of “alphabetic potential,” a classification that itself occupies seventeen linear meters of shelf space on Floor -1, filed, appropriately, under ‘P’.
