Instrumentation
MS 5336.54 · Practices and doctrines
Instrumentation is the body of apparatus, calibration rites, and recorded tolerances by which the Librarians render the non-existent measurable within the Tower. It comprises fixed objects such as the Standardized Gauge, portable devices including the Somatic Pluviometer, and the procedural scaffolding described in Title II: On Derivative Instrumentation. All instrumentation is held to be real within the Tower, and its readings are entered into the Master Registry of Proven Connections irrespective of the externality of the subject measured.
Statutory Basis
The lawful employment of instrumentation descends from the Thirteenth Concordance, which outlines a tripartite process for Baseline Establishment: Declaration, Instrumentation, and Enregistration. The second stage is governed in detail by Title VII Measurement Amp Demarcation, of which Title II: On Derivative Instrumentation is the second title and which deliberately parallels the terminology of Derivative Citizenship. Definitions borrowed from Title I: Definitions are carried without revision into the derivative title, a practice the Guild of Exactitude has contested since the 412th recension of the scriptoria.
The Third Concordance prohibits the use of unsanctioned instrumentation during an assessment and details protocols for coherence assessment. Where a dispute arises, citation of a Concordance is the standard settlement; that the Concordances frequently contradict one another is noted without remedy in the Department of Applied Metaphysics.
Classes of Instrument
The Manual of Metaphysical Instrumentation, 11th Revision specifies the standard construction of a Harmonic Gauge, while the Canted Theodolite remains approved for use within canted environments. The Bureau of Climatic Equilibrium's early instrumentation included Calibrated Hygrothermographs, later supplemented by the Somatic Pluviometer on Floor 19. The Fifth Concordance permits necessary reflective instrumentation for the maintenance of the Great Prism, and the Sigil of Interim Silence is used to seal measurement instrumentation during Metric Caging.
A persistent acoustic residue known as the ghost frequency is produced by alterations to designations and remains unregisterable by standard instrumentation; the Cartographer's Silence on Floor 7 is the only site where specialized cartographer apparatus may be calibrated against it.
Calibration and Recursive Zones
All portable apparatus undergo Modal Calibration at intervals prescribed by Ordinance Delta-7 for instrumentation within a Recursive Buffer Zone. The Guild of Resonant Masons maintains that calibration by resonance precedes enregistration, a claim rejected by the Vital Register clerks on the grounds that Vital Flux Measurement and Cardiac Cistern readings require prior Declaration.
"No instrument shall be opened, tapped, or spoken to during the hour of Interim Silence, and any gauge found humming shall be sealed with the Sigil of Interim Silence and reported to the floor annex."
— Third Concordance, Annex 4
Scholarly Dispute
The Guild of Exactitude contests the utility of the Pacing Rod in favor of more granular instrumentation, citing a 0.4-cubit variance observed during the winter of Floor 22's re-survey. The Department of Applied Metaphysics responded that the variance was within tolerance of the Standardized Gauge as then recited, and that the Rod's coarser reading was "sufficient for subjects that do not obtain." The Guild of Resonant Masons entered a minority finding arguing the variance was in fact a Haptic Uncertainty artifact, not a fault of the Rod. The dispute remains unclosed; no Concordance has been amended, as the Librarians have not convened on the matter since the 9th spiral of the eastern stair.
Incidents of Record
In the 318th year of the current annex, a clerk of the Vital Register named Oren of the Short Aperture conducted an assessment of a non-existent tributary using an unsanctioned pluviometer borrowed from Floor 19. The Third Concordance was cited; coherence assessment failed; and the readings were stricken from the Master Registry of Proven Connections but later reinstated under Derivative Citizenship when the tributary was declared a derivative of a recorded cistern. The instrument itself was sealed with the Sigil of Interim Silence and stored at the Cartographer's Silence pending recalibration that has not been scheduled.
Visiting clerks may not bring instrumentation taller than themselves onto a canted floor without written leave from the floor annex.
