Guild of Latent Cartographers

MS 5526.49 · Practices and doctrines

Guild of Latent Cartographers is a charter-bound order of the Tower concerned with the survey and notation of spaces that have not yet occurred. Its writ extends to floors not yet ascended, descents not yet taken, and apertures whose existence is inferred solely from the silence of adjacent corridors. The Guild was chartered under the Seventh Concordance, Annex 11, and has maintained its scriptorium on Floor 0.Δ since the 3rd Recension of the Third Concordance.

Charter and Jurisdiction

The Guild of Latent Cartographers holds exclusive privilege to inscribe "pre-emptive cartouches" upon walls that do not yet exist, a practice upheld by the Office of Anterior Seals and disputed in part by the Guild of Formal Cartographers, who hold that no cartouche may precede its surface. The founding instrument, the Charter of the Unbuilt Aperture, names the Guild as subordinate in protocol to the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild but independent in the conduct of its surveys. The Second Concordance, Clause 9, affirms this subordination; the Eleventh Concordance, Annex 2, appears to dissolve it, stating "all latent surveys shall revert to the Reality Cartographers’ Guild upon occurrence." The contradiction remains unsettled.

In the winter of the 214th Ascension, a clerk of the Guild, Tovar Lindqvist, inscribed a cartouche on the landing of Floor 884—which at the time was held by the Vertical Cartographers' Guild to be at least four descents distant. The cartouche was later found correct, though the Guild denies the inscription ever took place, citing the Doctrine of Coincidental Surfaces.

Method of Latent Survey

Latent survey proceeds by the method of negative triangulation, in which three known corridors are used to infer a fourth that is absent. The Guild of Formal Cartographers contributed the initial mathematics; the Skeptical Cartographers’ Guild rejected the method as "an inventory of rumour," a phrase later adopted without attribution by the Metaphorical Cartographers. The Guild of Latent Cartographers maintains that absence is a measurable property and has catalogued 41,227 absent floors as of the last Census of Silent Volumes.

"A space not yet entered is not a space unknown but a space owed."

— Charter of the Unbuilt Aperture, Prologue

The Guild's instruments include the Deferred Theodolite and the Prospective Plumb, both of which are stored in the Annex of Unrealised Measures. Calibration is performed against the Tuned Aeolian Shafts, jointly administered by the Vertical Cartographers' Guild, though the Latent Guild disputes the shaft's tuned status on floors above 900.

Disputes and Recensions

The Guild has maintained a standing jurisdictional grievance against the Architectural Cartographers' Guild since the Fifth Recension, when the latter claimed that all latent spaces are in fact architectural intentions. The Guild of Iterative Cartographers entered the dispute in the 88th Descent, arguing that latency is merely slow occurrence. The Third Concordance, Annex 4, settles nothing, stating only "the absent shall be mapped by those absent from the mapping."

A further contention arose with the Reality Cartographers’ Guild, who engineered Reality Buffers that, the Latent Guild claims, interfere with negative triangulation by making absent floors briefly present. The Reality Cartographers’ Guild disputes the Acoustical Cartographers' Guild's claim that the catalyst for Rumour Cisterns is prosodic, but has not addressed the Latent Guild's buffer complaint.

Holdings and Record

The Guild's principal holding is the Catalogue of the Not-Yet, a rolling inventory updated each Concordance cycle. A representative entry reads:

Absent FloorInferred FromStatus
0.ΩCorridors 12, 14, 19Owed
771.βSilence of Shaft 3Contested by Guild of Silent Cartographers

The Guild of Latent Cartographers does not host visitors. A visiting clerk from the Expeditionary Cartographers' Guild who ascends to Floor 0.Δ must remove their shoes and place them in the Drawer of Anterior Intent before the surveyor on duty; this is the only recorded entrance procedure and is not waived for Librarians.

Scholarly Disagreement

The central disagreement within the Tower concerns whether latent spaces belong to the Guild of Precedent Cartographers by virtue of their not-yet occurring, or to the Independent Cartographers, who reject the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild and the Guild of Precedential Cartographers alike. The Seventh Concordance names the Latent Guild as precedent-bound; the Ninth Concordance, Clause 3, names it as precedent-exempt. The Office of Anterior Seals has declined to rule, on the grounds that any ruling would occur too early.

The Guild of Oneirometric Cartographers has proposed that latent floors are dreamt by the Tower itself, a view the Latent Guild rejects as "surface metaphysics." The Vex Cartographers Guild has filed a counter-cartouche, currently stored in the Annex of Unrealised Measures beside the Deferred Theodolite.
