Guild of Iterative Cartographers

MS 0788.50 · Guilds, orders and offices

Whereas a map is never finished, only abandoned; and whereas each abandonment is itself a map; be it resolved that the Guild of Iterative Cartographers is hereby chartered, tasked with the maintenance and interpretation of all cartographic supersessions.

—Clause 12, Annex Δ, of the Tenth Concordance (On Cartographic Recursion)

The Guild of Iterative Cartographers is a chartered body responsible for the systematic documentation, preservation, and analysis of obsolete and superseded maps within the Tower. Founded on 7 Phrenos 841, its purview encompasses not only the maps themselves but the precise sequence of their replacement, the methodologies that rendered them obsolete, and the procedural voids created between successive iterations. The Guild operates under the principle—articulated in its founding charter—that the act of supersession carries more cartographic truth than any single, purportedly definitive rendering.

Jurisdiction and Mandate

The Guild’s primary mandate, as defined by the Tenth Concordance, is threefold: to archive every officially deprecated map; to annotate each with a precise supersession log detailing the clause, authority, and stated cartographic flaw that necessitated its replacement; and to maintain the Sequence Registers, which chart the genealogical relationships between entire families of maps. A key, and often controversial, aspect of its work is the curation of Interstitial Exhibits, where two or more conflicting maps of the same region are displayed in tandem, with guild commentary highlighting the topological and ontological discrepancies between them. This practice has repeatedly brought the guild into jurisdictional conflict with the Architectural Cartographers' Guild, which maintains that such discrepancies are merely clerical or procedural errors, not subjects worthy of independent study.

Methodology: The Delta Sequence

The guild’s analytical framework is built around the concept of the Delta Sequence—the notional map that exists only as the sum of changes between two documented versions. Guild cartographers argue that by studying the delta, one can infer the unstated pressures, discoveries, or ideological shifts that prompted the revision. The most famous application of this methodology is the protracted, and still incomplete, project to reconstruct The Delta Sequence Map, a meta-cartographic endeavor originally assigned to the Expeditionary Cartographers' Guild but later adopted as a core project by the Iteratives. The work hypothesizes a primordial, ur-map of the Tower from which all subsequent cartography has diverged.

Field agents, known as Supersessionists, are deployed to locations where mapping updates are known to be imminent. Their task is not to aid the primary survey (often conducted by the Reality Cartographers’ Guild or other sanctioned bodies) but to document the final state of the "old reality" before it is officially overwritten, a process they term "capturing the terminal iteration."

Scholarly Divisions and the Heretical Cartographers

Internal guild doctrine is not monolithic. A significant schism exists between the Proceduralists, who hold that the sequence of maps reveals the evolving bureaucratic logic of the Tower’s administration, and the Ontological Revisionists, who contend that each new map literally alters the spatial and metaphysical properties of the Tower, rendering the old maps not merely inaccurate but descriptions of a place that no longer exists in any form.

This latter view aligns closely with, and is believed to be conceptually indebted to, the practices of the unsanctioned Heretical Cartographers. While the Iterative Guild publicly disavows any affiliation, the Compendium of Unheeded Dissents records several internal memos arguing that the heretics’ practice of "writing architecture into being" is merely an extreme, unsanctioned form of iterative cartography. The Guild of Precedential Cartographers, before its dissolution, frequently cited this perceived ideological contamination in petitions to have the Iterative Guild’s charter revoked.

Notable Holdings and the Aethelred Controversy

The Guild’s central archive, the Hall of Abandoned Projections on Floor 14,322 (The Cartographic Lament), contains over 870,000 certified supersessions. Its most prized holding is the Spiral Sequence of the Western Recesses, a collection of 417 consecutive maps of the same non-Euclidean spiral staircase, each differing from the last by exactly one new step or one altered riser height.

The guild was centrally involved in the controversy surrounding Aethelred of the Unseen Corners. Aethelred’s final, unpublished survey of the Haematal Stairwell was declared obsolete by the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild under the Protocol of Manifest Delineation before it could be formally filed. The Iterative Guild’s successful petition to archive and annotate this "stillborn map" established the precedent that intention to supersede is sufficient to create a valid supersession log, even if the map being replaced was never officially entered into the record—a ruling that remains hotly contested by the Metaphorical Cartel.

Current Status

Today, the Guild of Iterative Cartographers operates as a mid-tier sanctioned body, often viewed as pedantic or melancholic by more action-oriented guilds like the Expeditionary Cartographers' Guild. However, its authority on matters of cartographic lineage is seldom challenged in formal dispute resolution. Its ongoing project to cross-reference its Sequence Registers with amendment logs to the Tenth Concordance itself is considered a foundational, if potentially recursive, work of Tower historiography. The Guild maintains that in a structure of infinite scale and mutable geometry, the only constant is the record of change.
