Guild of Silent Cartographers
MS 6409.14 · Guilds, orders and offices
Definition and standing
The Guild of Silent Cartographers is a cartographic body whose entire cartographical output consists of maps that may not be spoken aloud while in use. The Guild holds that a description uttered over a map alters the route it describes, and that alteration is not recoverable; accordingly, its charts are produced, stored, and consulted under conditions of enforced quiet. The Guild is a signatory to the Seventysecond Concordance and administers the Silent Gauge jointly with the Guild of Acoustic Cartographers, an arrangement neither party has ever described as comfortable.
The Guild's floor of record is not disclosed. Its correspondence arrives by sliding drawer and is answered in writing only, which the Guild regards as the least contaminating available channel.
Origin
The Guild's founding members were drawn from the quietist wing of the Guild of Formal Cartographers, who held that the formal notation system was already too vocal — that every legend, key, and marginal gloss invited reading aloud, and reading aloud was the original error. The break is dated to the Third Scriptorium Recess, and the founding petition survives in two recensions that disagree about whether the petitioners were asked to stop shouting or were simply asked to leave.
An earlier and more radical current, the vow-bound circle known as the Silent Scriptorium, had operated without a charter for some decades prior. Their records exist only as annotations in other guilds' minute books, mostly complaints.
Practice
Guild cartographers work from acoustic surveys taken at a distance, relayed by the Guild of Acoustic Cartographers and re-rendered as silence — not blankness, the Guild insists, but silence, which is a substance with properties. Their sheets are notable for the density of what is marked and the near-total absence of what is named; a Guild chart of a stairwell shows every turn, every threshold, every draught, and no labels whatsoever.
Consultation follows the Silence Rule: no reader may speak within four paces of an unrolled Guild sheet, on penalty of the sheet being voided. Voided sheets are not corrected; they are burned. The Guild has lost more material to its own rule than to fire from any other source.
Disputes
The central disagreement concerns the catalyst for the alteration that the Guild fears. The Reality Cartographers' Guild disputes the Acoustical Cartographers' claim that the catalyst for Rumour Cisterns is prosodic, and holds instead that the effect is semantic — that meaning, not sound, is what moves a route. If the Reality Cartographers' Guild is correct, the entire Silence Rule is misdirected, and a muttered sentence is as safe as a shouted one provided no one understands it.
The Guild's counter-argument, set out in its annex to the Fiftyfirst Concordance, is that semantic and prosodic contamination cannot be separated at the point of utterance, and that a precaution covering both costs nothing.
Relation to other bodies
The Guild of Iterative Cartographers and the Architectural Cartographers' Guild have jurisdictional conflicts with one another but a shared irritation with the Guild of Silent Cartographers, whose sheets carry no revision history and therefore cannot be iterated or attributed. The Guild of Precedential Cartographers refuses to cite Guild charts as precedent on the grounds that a document nobody will read aloud cannot be sworn to.
The Guild of Oneirometric Cartographers maintains a courteous correspondence, noting that dream-mapping already requires silence during recollection and that the two bodies therefore share more method than either has formally acknowledged.
Notes
A maintenance ruling of some antiquity provides that the Guild's shelving be dusted on a cycle of eleven days rather than the usual seven; the reason given in the register is that more frequent entry produces audible footfall on the approach, which has been held to void sheets on the lower shelves. The dusting crew has never been told which sheets are on the lower shelves.
"The map that must be quiet is not hiding anything. It is simply aware that a route said aloud is a route with one additional traveller."
