Floor 71

MS 3299.08 · Places and structures

Floor 71, unofficially designated the Atrium of Emergent Dimensions, is a disputed-classification floor situated between Floor 10,007 and the theoretical location of Floor -401. It is defined by its persistent and non-recurring architectural anomalies, which are catalogued, measured, and then archived by a dedicated corps of Librarians known as the Surveyors of Transience.

Architectural Phenomena

The primary feature of Floor 71 is its variable spatial geometry. While the floor maintains a consistent footprint of approximately 10,000 square meters, its internal topography and volume are subject to spontaneous, localized shifts. These shifts, or "Emergences," manifest as sudden expansions of ceiling height, the appearance of new corridors branching from established stacks, or the temporary solidification of previously intangible "phantom shelves." The Third Concordance, Annex γ, Clause 12, mandates that all Emergences be measured within 1.8 hours of their initial detection using calibrated theodolites and standardized tape measures manufactured on Floor 317. The resulting schematics are then filed on Floor Na under "Transient Architectonics."

A notable and oft-cited example is the "Fontaine Alcove," which manifested for 47 consecutive days in Sector 71-D. It featured a ceiling adorned with a fresco of impossible geometry and a non-functional fountain that produced a sound catalogued as "distant, metallic rain." The alcove vanished without structural residue, leaving only its filed measurements and an archival odor sample.

Administrative Protocol

Governance of Floor 71 is governed by a complex web of concordant articles. The Third Concordance establishes the measurement protocols, while the Seventh Concordance, Amendment δ, assigns custodial responsibility to the Surveyors. However, the Second Concordance, Clause 404, controversially asserts that "a floor which does not persist in form cannot be said to persist in function," implying Floor 71's administrative status is itself transient. This contradiction is typically resolved in practice by citing the more recent Seventh Concordance, though scholarly debates on the legitimacy of this procedural override are frequent in the journals of Floor 413.

The floor's permanent staff consists of twelve Surveyors and one Archivist-Superior, whose duty is to ensure no Emergence goes unrecorded. Their living quarters, known as the Anchorage, are the only structurally invariant location on the floor, built from materials sourced on Floor 707 for their "harmonic stability."

Relationship to Adjacent Floors

Floor 71's positional listing between Floor 10,007 and Floor -401 is topological rather than strictly spatial. Access is typically via a designated transfer stairwell on Floor 10,007, marked by a perpetually lit green lamp. The return aperture, however, has been documented to occasionally open onto other floors, including Floor 12 and, in one disputed log entry, a non-numbered antechamber believed to be a subsidiary of Floor Na. These errant returns are treated as secondary Emergences and are catalogued accordingly.

Some theorists, primarily from Floor 900, posit that the phenomena of Floor 71 are a "spillover" or "echo" of the dimensional instabilities associated with Floor -401. This hypothesis remains unproven, as direct comparative study is hampered by the classified nature of Floor -401's holdings.

Holdings and Cataloguing

Unlike most floors, Floor 71 does not hold permanent collections of books or artifacts. Its holdings are entirely meta-cognitive: the exhaustive records of its own changing state. These records—measurements, sketches, sonic recordings, and phenomenological descriptions—are considered the floor's true catalogue. Once an Emergence event concludes and its documentation is complete, the physical space returns to a neutral, library-standard layout, and the records are transferred off-floor for permanent storage, primarily on Floor Na and Floor 10,007.

A controversial holding is the "Möbius Log," a continuous scroll that documents a single, non-terminating Emergence believed to be a self-referential spatial loop. The scroll is stored in situ within the Anchorage, as its contents are deemed too unstable for transfer.

Scholarly Disputes

The fundamental nature of Floor 71 is a point of ongoing contention. The dominant "Phenomenological School," based on Floor 413, argues the floor is a unique entity whose purpose is to document the Tower's own capacity for architectural flux. The rival "Taxonomic Reductionists" of Floor 707 contend that Floor 71 is not a true floor at all, but a "persistent indexing error" in the Tower's spatial catalogue, and that its so-called Emergences are merely the system reconciling contradictory positional data from surrounding floors like Floor 10,007.

A further, more speculative dispute involves the floor's number. Some note that 71 is the reverse of 17, and suggest a hidden symmetrical relationship with the undocumented Floor 17. No evidence for the existence of Floor 17 has been substantiated, and the Librarians have issued no clarifying statement, rendering the theory a popular but unverified footnote in Tower cosmography.
