Floor 17

MS 2807.76 · Places and structures

Floor 17, designated the Chimera Vault in Third Concordance, Annex γ-7, is an archival floor specializing in the cataloging of composite entities. Its holdings consist exclusively of subjects whose documented properties are mutually exclusive or logically irreconcilable, filed under the principle of coexistent contradiction.

Location and Access

Floor 17 is administratively situated between Floor 18 and Floor 19. This placement is considered anomalous by some cartographers, as it creates a sequential triplet (17, 18, 19) within the otherwise non-sequential numbering of the Tower. The Librarians have issued no clarification, though Seventh Concordance, Clause 404, implies the sequence is a "codicil of ontological adjacency," suggesting the nature of contradiction on Floor 17 is foundational to the ordered reality of the subsequent floors.

Primary access is via the central spiral stairwell, Aperture Delta-12. A secondary, rarely-used pneumatic tube, designated Conduit 17-α, connects directly to the Speculative Taxonomies department on Floor 712, used for urgent transfers of newly identified paradoxical specimens.

Cataloging Methodology

The holdings of Floor 17 are organized not by subject, but by the type

  • Class A: Temporal Paradoxes. Entities documented as both creating and destroying their own causal antecedents (e.g., "The Key That Unlocked Its Own Forging," Accession No. 17-A-44).
  • Class B: Spatial Impossibilities. Objects or locations described as occupying volumes greater than their containing space (e.g., "The Hall Within a Drawer," Accession No. 17-B-89).
  • Class C: Identity Fissions. Beings that are conclusively recorded as being wholly identical to, and completely separate from, another being.
  • Class D: Property Negations. Items possessing a quality to such an extreme degree that the quality itself is negated (e.g., "The Absolutely Silent Bell," Accession No. 17-D-03).

Each record is maintained in duplicate on cardstock of contrasting colors (ivory and slate), and filed in interleaved drawers. The floor's ambient temperature is maintained at a constant 13°C, a condition stipulated in Fifth Concordance, Clause 17, to "prevent the resolution of contradictions through thermal enthusiasm."

The Vault of Unspoken Premises

The central chamber of Floor 17 houses the Vault of Unspoken Premises, a secure archive for contradictions considered "foundationally unstable." Access requires simultaneous authorization from a Librarian of the Fourth Order and the Senior Archivist of Floor 2001. Known holdings within the Vault include the "Set of All Sets That Do Not Contain Themselves" (Accession No. 17-V-01) and the "Map of Every Location This Map Does Not Show" (Accession No. 17-V-17). Circulation of Vault materials is prohibited; study is conducted in situ via shielded viewing ports.

Operational Controversies

The primary scholarly dispute regarding Floor 17 concerns its very purpose. The Precept of Integral Reality, a guiding Tower principle, states that all cataloged subjects are real within the Tower. A faction led by Archivist-Emiritus Valen of Floor 412 argues that Floor 17 is therefore not an archive of real contradictory things, but a containment zone for logical anomalies that, if allowed to interact with the general holdings, would destabilize broader cataloging efforts. This view is supported by the floor's robust structural isolation protocols.

The opposing view, championed by the Curators of the Canted Halls (Floor 207), holds that the contradictions are perfectly real and that their coexistence is the highest expression of Tower reality. They cite the seamless administrative placement of Floor 17 between Floor 18 and Floor 19 as evidence of its integral, non-threatening nature. This debate is formally recorded in the Disputation Logs of Floor 881, but no Concordance has yet been amended to settle it.

Notable Related Holdings

Floor 17 maintains extensive cross-references. Key related archives include:

  • Floor 1117 (Reversal Floors), for entities defined by their inverse states.
  • Floor 404, for cataloged errors and absences.
  • Floor Na, for alphanumeric indexing anomalies that sometimes generate contradictory classifications.
  • The Paradox Suppression Unit of Floor 2001, which coordinates with Floor 17 staff during "incursion events," wherein a contradiction briefly manifests active properties outside its filed location.

The floor's staffing roster is itself an object of study, as it is rumored to include individuals who are both present and absent on the duty schedules, in full compliance with Second Concordance payroll ordinances.
