Experimental Cultivar (EC)

MS 9461.04 · Practices and doctrines

Registry card for lumen-moss, Provisional Class 12-X. Annotations indicate its reclassification as an Experimental Cultivar (EC). From the holdings of the Vault of Primary Measures.

Experimental Cultivar (EC) is a formal regulatory designation under Cultivar Standards denoting a lineage of lumen-moss whose bio-resonant properties are under active, restricted study and have not yet been ratified for attenuation. An EC is distinguished from the Primary Cultivar (PC) by deliberate, documentable modifications, and from Attenuated Cultivar (AC) by its provisional legal status and containment protocols. All ECs are, by definition, the intellectual property of the Horticultural Guild and fall under the direct oversight of the Cultivar Council.

Legal Definition and Scope

The classification "Experimental Cultivar" is defined in Cultivar Standards, Annex VII, Clause 3.2: "Any propagated lineage of lumen-moss exhibiting measured deviations from the Primary Standards of growth pattern, spore emission frequency, or resonant echo, which deviations are the documented result of Guild-sanctioned intervention, shall be provisionally classified as an Experimental Cultivar." The key criteria are a documented progenitor from the PC, a Guild-sanctioned experimental log, and a measurable deviation that cannot be attributed to environmental degradation. Crucially, an EC is not considered a new species, but a cultivar under evaluation; its legal existence is contingent upon its experimental registry number.

Containment and Access Protocols

Per the Provisional Protocol Summaries (Series 44, Rev. 19), all EC samples must be housed in biosecure laboratories, typically on specialized research floors such as Floor 909. Access requires dual-key authorization: one key held by the presiding Senior Cultivator of the experiment, and the second held by the Office of the Provost of Containment. All interactions with an EC—including luminal feeding, spectral pruning, and resonance measurement—must be logged in triplicate. The escape of EC spores beyond a designated containment zone is a Reportable Incident of the First Order, triggering an immediate quarantine of the affected sector and a review by the Office of Experimental Resonance.

The Attenuation Pathway

The ultimate purpose of an EC designation is to shepherd a promising variant through the attenuation pathway toward becoming a stable Attenuated Cultivar (AC). This process, governed by Clause 8.1–8.7 of Annex VII, involves three phases:

Successful completion results in a new AC classification, such as Cultivar M-44. Failure results in the EC's termination and archival of its logs.

Notable Controversies and the M-44 Precedent

The most cited dispute regarding EC oversight concerns the lineage of Cultivar M-44. Proponents of the "Direct Attenuation" school, citing early growth logs, argue M-44 was derived directly from the PC via standard attenuation protocols. The rival "Experimental Progenitor" school, supported by a contested reading of resonance signatures in the Vault of Primary Measures, holds that M-44 passed through an undocumented EC phase (tentatively designated EC-44α) whose logs were lost following the Writ of Contingent Supersession. The Cultivar Council has ruled this dispute "moot for regulatory purposes," but it remains a foundational schism in horticultural historiography.

Inter-Guild Coordination

Because an EC's deviations often involve anomalous resonance, the Office of Experimental Resonance maintains a standing observer on all EC oversight panels. The Office's primary concern is whether the cultivar's experimental properties might intersect with or disrupt established echo-collection medium classes. Furthermore, any EC with properties that alter local dust deposition or suspension patterns must be reported to the Dust Arbitration Council, on which the Horticultural Guild holds a permanent seat.
