Cultivar M-44

MS 0028.23 · Objects and instruments

Cultivar M-44, more commonly known as Mourning Moss, is an Attenuated Cultivar (AC) derived from the Primary Cultivar (PC) and standardized under Cultivar Standard 22.γ, clause 44. It is primarily cultivated within the Moss-Growth Spire on Floor 112 and is distinguished by its capacity to absorb and re-emit specific emotional resonances, particularly those associated with grief and loss.

Taxonomic Classification and Properties

Cultivar M-44 is classified as a Class-3 Reactive Symbiote under the Cultivar Standards. Its biomass exhibits a velvety, deep indigo coloration with faint silver veining, which intensifies under low-light conditions. The cultivar's defining property is its psychosensitive matrix: it absorbs ambient emotional "tonalities," particularly those of protracted sorrow or reflective melancholy, and converts them into a soft, cold luminescence. This emitted light, peaking at a wavelength of 440 nanometers, is non-nutritive and serves no known biological function for the moss itself, leading to its primary application in memorial architecture.

The reactive mechanism is not fully understood, though it is stipulated in Standard 22.γ, Annex to be a "non-conscious, biochemical resonance with ambient psionic residue." Its growth rate is deliberately retarded through genetic attenuation, requiring precise nutrient solutions as outlined in the Standards. Unauthorized acceleration of growth is a contravention of Guild law and can result in unstable, emotionally volatile blooms.

Cultivation and Commercial Deployment

Commercial propagation of Cultivar M-44 is a licensed activity overseen by the Cultivar Council. All active growth vats are required to be registered with the Council's Spore Registry, and harvests must be accompanied by a Certificate of Emotional Purity, attesting that the biomass has not been exposed to proscribed emotional spectra (e.g., sudden terror or rapturous joy, as per Clause 44.7).

Its primary use is in the fabrication of Mourning Glass, a architectural material used in sepulchres, memory vaults, and certain quiet corners of the Tower's libraries. When installed, the moss, suspended in a colloidal silicate gel, provides a self-sustaining, ambient light source that is considered aesthetically appropriate for spaces of contemplation. The Horticultural Guild holds the monopoly on both cultivation and installation, a right contested historically by the now-dissolved Cultivators' League.

Jurisdictional Disputes and the Purity Principle

Cultivar M-44 has been the subject of numerous adjudications by the Cultivar Council, primarily concerning lineage purity and symbiont rights. The Fifth Concordance implicitly supports the "Purity Principle" – that a cultivar's utility is contingent upon its emotional specificity – while the Third Concordance emphasizes the rights of cultivated organisms to "exist free of imposed sentiment." This contradiction is routinely cited in arbitration.

A notable case, In re: Contamination of Vat M-44/112-Δ (Archival Year 742), established the precedent that moss exposed to celebratory fervor during a nearby Festival of Receding Shadows had to be decommissioned, as its resultant pink-tinged glow violated the solemnity clauses of its commercial license. The Cultivar Council's ruling was upheld by the Dust Arbitration Council, on which the Cultivar Council holds a permanent seat.

Scholarly Debate and Anomalous Behavior

A persistent scholarly debate concerns whether Cultivar M-44 genuinely experiences a facsimile of mourning or is merely a biochemical cipher. Proponents of the "Sympathetic Resonance" theory point to observed growth patterns near sites of historical tragedy, where the moss exhibits denser clustering without apparent nutrient cause. Detractors cite the attenuation process, which they argue strips the AC of any capacity for true reactive experience, making it a sophisticated bio-lamp.

Furthermore, documented cases exist of so-called "Wild M-44" – colonies believed to have descended from unreported experimental branches or pre-attenuation stock – displaying unpredictable emotional absorption, including documented instances of moss that gleam with a light described as "smug" or "anxiously anticipatory." These anomalies are classified under the broader umbrella of Experimental Cultivar (EC) and are subject to immediate sequestration by Guild authorities.

Relation to the Primary Cultivar

As an Attenuated Cultivar (AC), Cultivar M-44 lacks the reactive plasticity and reproductive capability of the Primary Cultivar (PC). It is propagated solely through controlled subdivision of existing biomass, never from spores. Each commercial batch can be traced, via the Spore Registry, back to a master fragment derived from the PC. This enforced sterility is central to maintaining the cultivar's standardized emotional profile and is the core of the Cultivar Council's regulatory authority over its production and use.
