Attenuated Cultivar (AC)
MS 3940.29 · Practices and doctrines
Attenuated Cultivar (AC) is the standardized taxonomic class for those lineages of lumen-moss deemed safe and stable for utilitarian lighting applications throughout the Tower. An Attenuated Cultivar is defined by its predictable photic output, its non-invasive substrate requirements, and the suppression of certain reactive and reproductive traits present in its progenitor, the Primary Cultivar (PC). The cultivation, classification, and commercial deployment of AC is governed exclusively by the Cultivar Standards as promulgated by the Cultivar Council of the Horticultural Guild.
Definition and Certification
Per Clause 4.1.α of the Cultivar Standards, a strain achieves Attenuated Cultivar status only after undergoing a Minimum Observation Period of thirty-seven Tower years within a Council-sanctioned attenuation chamber. Certification requires the strain to demonstrate, among other criteria, a luminance decay rate not exceeding 2.7 lumens per annum under standard conditions, a complete absence of spore motility, and a failure to propagate beyond a designated growth perimeter when deprived of nutrient supplements. The official certification seal, a stamped cerulean wax disc bearing the Council's sigil, must be affixed to the primary cultivation vessel and is recorded in the Central Attenuation Register maintained on Sub-floor Ξ-7.
Standardized Subclasses
The Cultivar Standards further delineate three operational subclasses of AC, each tailored for specific architectural and bureaucratic environments:
- AC-I (General Illumination): The most common subclass, authorized for corridors, reading rooms, and administrative offices. AC-I is characterized by a soft, diffuse white light and a rhizomatic structure that readily adheres to prepared plaster or stone substrates. Its cultivation is detailed in Annex Δ of the Standards.
- AC-II (Archival Grade): Employed in scriptoriums and high-security stacks, AC-II emits a cooler, more focused light spectrum deemed non-detrimental to vellum, ink, and older binding resins. Its cultivation requires a substrate infused with powdered moon-chalk, as specified in Spiral II of the Codicil to the Standards.
- AC-III (Ceremonial/Mourning): This subclass encompasses strains like Mourning Moss (Cultivar M-44), which produce a subdued, often blue-tinged luminescence. Deployment of AC-III is restricted to memorial niches, contemplation cells, and the Galleries of Attenuated Light, and requires a special dispensation from the Council's Subcommittee on Luminal Temperament.
Cultivation and Maintenance Protocols
The propagation of AC is a licensed activity. Cultivators must utilize Council-issued nutrient solutions (Series N-1 through N-9) and adhere to precise photoperiodic schedules calibrated to the theoretical circadian rhythms of the Primary Cultivar, a practice believed to maintain stability. Pruning is mandated every 120 days using silver-nickel alloy shears registered with the Guild. The resulting clippings are to be incinerated in sealed furnaces; Clause 11.γ explicitly prohibits composting, citing risks of "attenuation reversion." Maintenance of installed AC, typically housed in Attenuated Lumen-Sconces, falls under the jurisdiction of the Lamplighters Union, which performs biannual luminance verification and seal inspections.
Controversies and Scholarly Dispute
The ontological status of Attenuated Cultivar remains a point of quiet debate. The Purist School, often aligned with the Silent College, argues that AC is not a true cultivar but a "lumen-moss in a state of perpetual convalescence," its essential nature diminished but not fundamentally altered. They cite documented, though rare, instances of "luminal flaring" in older AC installations, a trait of the Primary Cultivar. The Utilitarian School, championed by the Horticultural Guild, holds that the attenuation process creates a new, stable entity fit for purpose, and that any flaring is merely residual energy dissipating, not a reversion. This dispute is tangentially referenced in the contradictory appendices to the Third and Seventh Concordance regarding the definition of "artificial life."
Commercial and Regulatory Impact
"The light is a tenant, and the sconce its leasehold; the Cultivar Standards are the covenants that bind them both." – Ordinance of Luminous Tenancy, Preamble
The economic ecosystem surrounding AC is vast. Trade in certified spores, regulated substrates, and approved nutrient solutions follows the Guild's mercantile codes. Violations of the Cultivar Standards carry severe penalties, ranging from asset forfeiture to permanent revocation of cultivation licenses. The most serious contravention, "willful cultivation of an Unattenuated Primary Strain in a civic space," is classified as a Grade-5 Lumen Hazard and is adjudicated directly by the full Cultivar Council, whose rulings are, by Concordance, final and unappealable.
