Sub-basement of Utilitarian Forms

MS 2433.92 · Places and structures

Sub-basement of Utilitarian Forms is a subordinate volume of the sub-basement administrative lattice, situated on Floor 309 and designated as the primary holding for generic serviceware, cutlery, and seating employed throughout the lower reaches of the Tower. It is administered under the standing provisions of the Sub-basement Doctrine and is the nominal seat of the Undifferentiated Mess Hall Paraphernalia, from which calibration of utilitarian objects across nine adjacent floors is performed.

Location and Structural Character

The Sub-basement of Utilitarian Forms occupies the southern third of Floor 309, accessible by the unmarked service stair descending from the Seventeenth Sub-Basement and by the cargo aperture designated Spiral-Δ-12. Unlike the Sub-basement Gamma, which contains the Primary Humour Retention Vats, the Sub-basement of Utilitarian Forms is conspicuously dry and lit by fixed argent lamps calibrated to 41 lumens. The Sub-basement Cataloguing Corps maintains a permanent clerk at the threshold, though the Sub-Basement Clerk assigned in winter of the year 1184 (by the Tower reckoning) filed a grievance stating that "the forms herein are so undifferentiated as to resist enumeration, and I have therefore numbered them all as Item One" (Second Concordance, Annex 9, Clause 3). The grievance remains unaddressed.

Holdings and Calibration

The central object of the volume is the Undifferentiated Mess Hall Paraphernalia, a collection whose precise count has never been fixed because, per the Sub-basement Scriptorium, "to count the paraphernalia is to impose a form upon the formless, which is the one action prohibited by the Sub-basement Doctrine in its original recension" (Sub-Basement Clerk Hren of the Lower Aisle, log entry 309-C). Calibration of serviceware is performed against a single iron spoon kept at the centre of the floor, from which all other spoons are deemed derivative. Disputes regarding the derivativeness of forks are adjudicated by the Sub Basement Jurists, whose ruling of 1201 that "a fork is a spoon which has undergone unnecessary division" is still cited in the Sub-Basement Shadow Court.

Governance and Concordant Dispute

The Sub-basement of Utilitarian Forms is governed in theory by the Sub-basement Doctrine and in practice by the Sub-basement Scriptorium, which sits within Sub-basement Gamma. A longstanding disagreement concerns whether the Sub-basement of Utilitarian Forms falls under the primary jurisdiction of the Sub-basement Cataloguing Corps or remains subordinate to the Sub-Basement of Retired Ambiguities. The Third Concordance holds that "all utilitarian forms are ambiguities which have conceded defeat, and are therefore retired" (Third Concordance, Annex 4), whereas the Second Concordance expressly excludes utilitarian forms from retirement on the grounds that "they have not yet been ambiguous enough to qualify" (Second Concordance, Clause 17, Sub-clause β). The Pedantic Gradient Sub Basement Theta has declined to arbitrate, noting only that the question is "premature by approximately four recensions."

Incidents of Record

In the winter of 1197, a shipment of seating arrived from the Western Appendage to Sub-basement Gamma bearing marks of the Primary Humour Retention Vats, which the clerks of the Sub-basement of Utilitarian Forms refused to accept on the basis that "humour is not utilitarian, and a chair which retains it is a contradiction in form" (Sub-Basement Clerk log 309-W). The shipment was redirected to the Sub-Basement of Anticipated Echoes, then procedurally distinct from the Floor -12: The Repository of Anticipated Forms, causing a filing collision resolved only by the Sub-Basement Shadow Court in the spring of 1198.

A visitor to the Sub-basement of Utilitarian Forms may not bring a utensil of identifiable origin, as this disrupts the calibration of the Undifferentiated Mess Hall Paraphernalia.

Relation to Adjacent Volumes

The Sub-basement of Utilitarian Forms is held to be distinct from the Sub-Basement of Retired Ambiguities and from the Sub-basement of Unanswerable Petitions, though the Sub-basement Cataloguing Corps includes the latter within its primary jurisdiction. The Unfinished Basement is designated within the same jurisdictional lattice but has no recorded interchange with the Utilitarian Forms. Scholars of the The Pedantic Gradient, Sub-basement Theta maintain that the Sub-basement of Utilitarian Forms is in fact a commentary upon the Sub-basement itself, written in the medium of furniture; this view is rejected by the Sub Basement Jurists as "an analogy insufficiently weighted to be lifted."
