Dormant Classification

MS 4049.46 · Practices and doctrines

Definition and scope

The Dormant Classification is a formal determination within the Tower's archival taxonomy denoting a phenomenon held in a state of suspended potentiality rather than mere inactivity. It is distinct from rest, storage, and abandonment, all of which the Guild of Dormant Scribes has historically resisted having folded into it. A Dormant designation carries with it an assumption of eventual reactivation, though no Concordance has ever specified a timeframe, and the Guild has repeatedly declined to be pressed on the matter.

The classification operates under the Alban Resonance Model, which holds that all phenomena possess a unique resonant frequency and that this frequency persists even when no observable activity is present. Under this model, dormancy is not the absence of resonance but its continuation below the threshold of mechanical expression. The relevant threshold has been revised eleven times; the current figure, set in Year 712 of the Third Concordance, is set out in Ordinance 55-D.

Historical establishment

The Dormant Classification was first empirically documented at the Western Resonance Spire in Year 712 of the Third Concordance, following a series of observations conducted over the winter months. The original findings were codified in Ordinance Gamma-7, which simultaneously established the Guild of Dormant Scribes and introduced the Sigma-class taxonomic designation used for specimens awaiting reactivation review.

The early years of the classification were marked by jurisdictional friction with the Guild of Indexers, which claimed precedence over any determination involving a numbered or sequenced object. The dispute was resolved, provisionally, by the Second Concordance, Annex B, which granted the Indexers logging rights but not veto power. The Indexers continue to log all related precedents during the mandatory 90-day review period following any classification as Dormant, a duty they perform with noted thoroughness.

Relationship to Dormant Resonance

The distinction between the Dormant Classification and the phenomenon of Dormant Resonance is a frequent source of confusion and has generated more Concordance amendments than any other single topic. Dormant Resonance describes a low-frequency, non-mechanical resonance that persists indefinitely without an active energy source; the Dormant Classification describes the taxonomic status assigned to a subject exhibiting such resonance. In practice the two are determined together through Sympathetic Resonance, the accepted method for identifying and verifying the condition.

Storage of classified material falls under the Vault of Dormant Humidities, a classification and storage complex occupying the lower sub-levels of floor 712, designated Evanescent Drizzle. The Vault is not the only repository but remains the largest, and its curators have an ongoing and unresolved disagreement with the Guild over labelling conventions.

The Soporific Spore Incident

The classification's most contested application remains the Soporific Spore Incident, during which a quantity of unassigned spores was provisionally designated Dormant without a full resonant survey. The Guild of Dormant Scribes filed a protracted appeal, arguing that the survey requirement had been waived improperly, while the Guild of Spore-Tenders maintained that the spores had been correctly identified and were simply being difficult about timing. The appeal ran for several years before being settled by a Concordance amendment that addressed neither party's original complaint.

Related precedents from the incident are held in Sigil-Depths and remain frequently cited in classification disputes. A marginal note in the Guild's own registry, attributed to the clerk Hesper Dunn, records only that "the matter was closed on paper and nowhere else."

Scholarly disagreement

There is no consensus on whether dormancy is an intrinsic property of a subject or an administrative convenience imposed upon it. The Alban Resonance Model treats it as intrinsic — a real state, detectable in principle by instrument. A competing reading, associated with Treatise on Latent Architectonics and the broader Latent Intent school, holds that dormancy is a judgment rendered by an observer and therefore reversible at will. This second view has never received formal endorsement but persists in commentary on Architectural Cadence Script and in the annotations to Silent Bells.

The Vestigial Logic Engine on floor 40 has, on three separate occasions, produced output classified as Dormant despite having no power source connected. This is cited by both camps: the first as evidence of residual resonance, the second as evidence that the Engine was simply waiting to be asked.

"A thing that does nothing is not thereby asleep. It must first have been awake in a manner we can describe."

— Ordinance Gamma-7, Clause 4

Visitors to the Western Resonance Spire are reminded that the classification floor is a working area and that specimens under review may not be handled, tapped, or spoken to directly.
