Catalytic Rest
MS 2093.06 · Practices and doctrines
Catalytic Rest is the condition of a subject that remains at rest while continuing to produce effects in adjacent subjects without itself being altered, depleted, or — by the definition adopted in Annex 2 — properly said to exist. It is distinguished from ordinary rest by the requirement of output and from ordinary activity by the requirement of stillness. The Department of Epistemic Cartography classifies Catalytic Rest under Type 1 (Catalytic) and maintains that it is the most frequently reported of the catalytic conditions, largely because it is the most frequently mistaken for something else.
Definition and measurement
Clause 9 of the Third Concordance defines a subject in Catalytic Rest as one "which neither moves, nor is moved, nor yet consents to be regarded as absent." This third clause was added in the second recension after the Pol-Vek Contradiction left two survey teams stationed eleven floors apart, each insistent that the other party was posting results on their behalf.
Measurement proceeds by the silence protocol set out in the Thorne Principle: a floor is held to be restraining a subject in Catalytic Rest where the walls return less sound than the load requires. Observers are instructed to note the deficiency in decibels to one decimal place and not to discuss it afterwards. The Registry's Standard Practice Bulletin 447 permits the use of a hinged rest at 14 degrees where instruments must be set down during observation, pursuant to Form TR-4. Instruments are not to be left on the rest overnight.
The Quartzine Affair
The clearest documentary instance is the Symbiotic Tincture Formulation disaster of the winter of Sigma-3,441, when a tincture left in Catalytic Rest on Floor 203 continued to catalyse a secondary suspension for nineteen days after every flask in the bay had been sealed, catalogued, and withdrawn. The residue — later classified as Void-Resin under Annex IX of the Conventions for Catalytic & Inert Residues — accumulated in the floor's eastern stairwell to a depth of 41 millimetres and could not be mopped, since mopping constitutes a response.
"The tincture did nothing. The nothing was done by the tincture. The record shall not confuse the two."
— Third Concordance, Annex 2, marginal gloss in the hand of the sixth recension
No one was disciplined. The investigator's finding, filed as Article 88 of the inquest, held that the formulation had behaved exactly as a formulation in Catalytic Rest ought, and that the fault lay with the flask-bay's previous classification as Dormant — a category which, as the Guild of Dormant Scribes had argued for two centuries, does not allow for output.
Referential behaviour
A subject in Catalytic Rest tends to draw its references toward itself, and to hold them there. This is a special case of the Principle of Referential Inertia, and the Cartographers' standing caveat — that a subject at rest in its references tends to remain at rest — applies with unusual force. Lingering references are sometimes mistaken for evidence of the subject's reality; under the Doctrine of Catalytic Absence, they are evidence only of the subject's generative absence. The distinction matters chiefly to registrars, who must decide whether to open a new holding or merely amend an old one, and who have in the past decided wrongly. The resulting accumulations are catalogued as Referential Erosion when a holding is found to have thinned in cross-reference but thickened in annotation.
Scholarly disagreement
The Fourth Concordance and the Third are not reconciled on the question of whether a subject in Catalytic Rest may be disturbed by citation. The Fourth holds, in Clause 4, that citation is the ordinary respiration of an archived thing and cannot be treated as an event. The Third holds, contra, that a citation issued to a subject at rest constitutes a summons, and that summonses are answered. Practitioners follow the Fourth and prepare for the Third.
A further dispute turns on the Stone of Catalytic Cognition, which Supervisor Garland Everson maintains could be produced only by a reader held in Catalytic Rest — a proposal that has been neither tested nor dismissed, since the required reader would have to refrain from turning pages, and the Department has not yet ruled on whether refraining counts toward certified reading time.
Incidents and current standing
Catalytic Rest is pleaded most often in disputes over stalled expeditions, where a surveyor who has not moved in eleven years is said to be resting catalytically rather than lost. Section 4 of Annual Register Sigma-14,022 records nineteen such pleas; fourteen were upheld. In one, the surveyor was found to have been walking the whole time, and the plea was upheld anyway on the grounds that his walking had produced no ascertainable effect.
The Schism of the Unbound Glossary arose in part from the question of whether the Glossary's unbound entries were in Catalytic Rest or merely untidy. The schism has not closed. A reading desk has been standing on the disputed shelf since Sigma-9,882, and the Librarians will not move it.
