Self-Definition
MS 6274.47 · Practices and doctrines
Self-Definition is the condition under which a subject supplies, from within its own entry, the criteria by which that entry is to be judged complete. It is distinguished from Self-Description in that the latter merely reports its own contents, while the former legislates them. The distinction was drawn at the Courts of Definition in the eleventh sitting of the Vernal Term, and has not been successfully overturned, though it has been repeatedly narrowed.
Self-Definition is catalogued on Floor 8, Column 4, Shelf 19, under a classification the subject assigned to itself in 1,204. The classification differs from the one the catalogue had previously assigned by one shelf and two columns. Both are retained in the finding aid. Visitors seeking the entry are advised to consult the shelf it claims before the shelf it occupies.
Doctrine and precedence
The governing authority is Ruling 88.45, which limits permissible self-referential clauses to thirty-two and assigns each a metaphysical weight so that the chain of reference may terminate. Self-Definition occupies the outer permitted edge of that ruling: it is the last form in which a subject may state its own terms before the statement becomes the thing stated.
Gradient 10 is reserved for entries exhibiting Critical Coherence or Self-Sustaining Definition, and Self-Definition is the ordinary route by which an entry reaches it. Attainment of Gradient 10 frequently triggers a Gradient 10 containment review, which is generally a formality; the review's own terms are, by long convention, not themselves reviewed.
Related but distinct states are catalogued separately. Axiomatic Recursion describes self-reference acquiring foundational logical primacy; Self-Definition does not require primacy, only sufficiency. Recursive Boundary Definition concerns the drawing of limits; Self-Definition concerns the drawing of terms. The Ruling of Immaculate Recursion sets out the three conditions for Foundational Recursion — Primacy of Self-Reference, Closure of Definition, and Termination Potential — and Self-Definition is generally held to satisfy the second while failing the first in roughly six cases in ten.
The case of Floor 8
The entry on Floor 8 was compiled by Archivist Meridian Holt, who had been assigned to reconcile the shelf-mark dispute and who instead appended a clause to the entry asserting that the entry's completeness was to be determined by the entry. The Self-Reference Audit of 1,209 found the clause irregular but not void. Holt's defence, recorded in the audit's appendix, was that the shelf had been challenged twice in a decade and she "saw no other way to make it stop" (Appendix 4, Holt's Testimony).
The clause has since been invoked four times, three of them successfully. On the fourth occasion, a visiting scholar from the School of Applied Paradox asked whether the entry could declare itself incomplete. The entry was consulted for eleven days. It declined to answer, which the Courts of Definition later ruled was itself a determination. Floor 8 has not been re-shelved since.
Points of scholarly disagreement
The Concordances do not agree on whether Self-Definition is a species of Recursive Definition or a separate instrument that merely resembles one.
"A subject that defines itself defines nothing but the act; the act is the entry; the entry is therefore closed."
— Third Concordance, Annex Delta-12, Note 3
Against this, Clause 19 treats unstable self-definition as an ontological risk and presumes that a self-defining subject is, at minimum, unstable — a presumption the Floor 8 entry regards as defamatory. The School of Applied Paradox argues more sharply that the Paradox of Self-Application cannot properly be raised against the classification system at all, since the system is not a member of the classes it assigns. The Courts have heard this argument six times and rejected it five.
Ruling 88.45 was itself elevated from a lower Court of Definition, which is sometimes cited as proof that the ruling's authors understood the problem better than its readers do.
Interaction with containment
Where Self-Definition is challenged, the challenge is resolved under the Principle of Containment Through Definition, which holds that the precise definition of a subject determines its ontological standing. A self-defining subject therefore defines its own standing. This is the source of most of the litigation. The Fuzzy Sets of Definition were compiled precisely to hold cases in which the terms are self-supplied but do not close — a condition that occurs, by the Registrar's count, in 41 of the 200 entries catalogued to date.
The Self-Referential Proviso and its corrected recension The Self-Referential Proviso diverge on the standing of entries that define themselves more than once. Practitioners are reminded to cite the recension, not the proviso, though both remain in force. The Department of Self-Aware Archives maintains a standing objection to this reminder and has done so since 1,188.
Comparable phenomena
The Silence of Floor π is the canonical example of a self-defining anomaly and remains the only entry that has never been asked to justify its terms. By contrast, Variant V is a self-definition that failed to close and is preserved as a warning. A Sealed Vault on Floor 12 is not self-defining and should not be cited as though it were; the vault's terms are set out in full and are, by design, not accessible.
An inventory of the entries currently carrying self-defining clauses is maintained by the Registrar:
- Floor 8, Column 4, Shelf 19 — entry in force, contested
- Floor 41, Column 2, Shelf 7 — entry withdrawn, superseded
- Floor ψ, Aperture 3 — entry sealed, terms unread
- Floor 12, the Vault annexe — not an entry; listed here in error; do not amend
A self-defining entry may not be re-shelved during the winter quarter. This is old practice, and no one now recalls the reason.
