Gradient 10 (Critical)
MS 4118.73 · Practices and doctrines
Gradient 10 (Critical) denotes the point at which a gradient function ceases to be linear and begins to exhibit behavior categorized as terminal or irreversible under the governance of the Bureau of Gradient Integrity. It is the final designation on both the Luminal Gradient scale and the Temporal Decay index, preceding what is colloquially termed Reality Shear. The state is governed by Clause 12.8 of the Tenth Concordance, which defines the critical behavior of Grade-7 Chronostatic Fluid when exposed to unresolved causal probability gradients exceeding 9.8.
Definition and Thresholds
A gradient is declared Gradient 10 (Critical) when its rate of change exceeds the capacity of standard attenuation protocols outlined for Gradient 1–3. Specific thresholds vary by gradient type. For luminous gradients, Gradient 10 corresponds to an illumination intensity exceeding 9.5 on the Luminal Gradient scale, a state officially recorded as "Unacceptable Glare" but functionally equivalent to perceptual bleaching and eventual retinal crystallization. For spatiotemporal gradients, the critical point is marked by a localized temporal differential exceeding 4.2 seconds per second, at which point Gradient Stasis protocols become the only permissible intervention.
Protocols and Containment
Upon a Gradient 10 declaration by a Clerk-in-Residence, the Bureau of Gradient Integrity assumes direct authority, and the affected area is placed under Gradient Stasis. This involves the immediate application of Epistemic Dampeners and the sealing of all apertures with Stasis Wax, a substance whose recipe is held solely by the Clerks of the Gradient. All personnel, including the declaring Clerk, are required to withdraw to a minimum safe distance of one full spiral turn. The now gradient-locked zone is entered into the Gradient Mapping registry with a crimson sigil, pending a Review of Irreversibility, which can take decades.
Notable Instances
The most documented instance remains the Pedantic Gradient incident of Aperture Σ-12. Following a clerical error during a routine calibration of the Ephemeral Gradient stylus, the Pedantic Gradient, Sub-basement Theta accelerated from Gradient 4 (Nominal) to Gradient 10 (Critical) in under seven minutes. The subsequent Reality Shear erased the original Sub-basement Theta and its attendant Clerk from all records, though the gradient field itself persists, catalogued separately. This event directly inspired the Selvage Gradient Proposal and its more stringent monitoring clauses.
Disputed Applications
A persistent scholarly debate concerns the application of the Gradient 10 designation to the Gradient of Ascent/Descent. Some cartographers argue that the perpetual, unchanging nature of the gradient’s 4.5 Luminal Gradient illumination precludes any critical state. Others, citing obscure appendices to the Proposed Nineteenth Concordance, contend that the Gradient of Ascent/Descent is, by definition, always at Gradient 10, as its endlessness represents a terminal condition for any entity attempting to measure its totality. This view is not endorsed by the Bureau, which maintains the gradient is permanently stabilized at Gradient 4.5.
Artifacts and Sigils
Areas recovered from a Gradient 10 event often contain solidified gradient residues, classified as Grade-7 Chronostatic Congeals. These are the only permissible materials for inscribing Pressure-Gradient Sigils of the highest order. Furthermore, all official documentation pertaining to a Gradient 10 event must be inscribed using an Ephemeral Gradient stylus dipped in ink mixed with a minute quantity of Stasis Wax, creating a record that is, by law, "impervious to the gradients it describes."
The declaration of Critical is not an observation of failure, but the final successful act of measurement. After Gradient 10, the measurer and the measured become indistinguishable, and the Bureau’s duty shifts from governance to commemoration.
