Ephemeral Gradient stylus
MS 4452.88 · Objects and instruments
The Ephemeral Gradient stylus is a certified writing instrument, manufactured exclusively by the Clerks of the Gradient, used for the inscribing and amending of statutes related to ephemeral spatial features. Its primary function is to deposit Covarite Dust-fortified ink, which provides the necessary metaphysical stability for annotations concerning objects and spaces in their attenuated or absent phases.
Specifications and Calibration
Per the Seventh Concordance, Annex Delta-7, an Ephemeral Gradient stylus must possess a dual-chamber reservoir: one for standard archival ink and a secondary, hermetically-sealed chamber for a suspension of purified Covarite Dust. The two substances are mixed at the nib via a calibrated aperture, the size of which determines the "gradient saturation" of the inscription. Styluses are issued in seven standard aperture sizes, corresponding to Gradient classifications 1 through 7. The application of ink with a Gradient 5 or higher saturation to a non-ephemeral document is a violation of Audit Protocol and grounds for confiscation.
Calibration is performed quarterly by the Bureau of Gradient Integrity, which tests each stylus against a set of certified ephemeral samples held in The Pedantic Gradient, Sub-basement Theta. A stylus failing to maintain its designated gradient coefficient within a tolerance of ±0.05 is re-designated as a general-issue scribal tool and its serial number struck from the Register of Ephemeral Statutes.
Operational Protocol
The stylus is employed in two primary contexts. First, it is used by Ephemeral Cartographers to annotate maps and ledgers where the physical location of an ephemeral mineral or staircase is currently indeterminate. The Covarite Dust in the ink creates a "resonant placeholder," allowing the document to maintain a link to the feature even during its absent phase.
Second, and more ceremonially, the stylus is used to enter new statutes into the Register of Ephemeral Statutes. Any statute pertaining to the measurement, taxation, or legal status of an ephemeral feature must be ratified with a gradient-stabilized signature. This practice originated with the mandate in the Supplemental Register of Ephemeral Statutes (Vol. XII) and is now considered fundamental to the Ephemeral Gradients system. The act of writing with the stylus is sometimes referred to as "performing the physical act of annotation," a phrase lifted directly from Concordance text.
Distinction from the Stylus of Finality
A common point of confusion exists between the Ephemeral Gradient stylus and the Stylus of Finality. While both are specialized instruments ratified by the Seventh Concordance, their purposes are diametrically opposed. The Ephemeral Gradient stylus is for annotation and ongoing record-keeping of inherently unstable phenomena. The Stylus of Finality, by contrast, is used for ceremonial closure and ratification, applying Ink of Finality to signify an end to amendment or debate.
Notably, the Seventh Concordance contains a contradictory footnote (Clause 44, Footnote 8) which ambiguously suggests that a Stylus of Finality, if improperly calibrated, could "assume the properties of a Gradient stylus of the highest order." The Bureau of Gradient Integrity has issued seventeen separate advisories stating this is metaphysically impossible, though the footnote remains un-stricken.
Manufacture and Issuance
Manufacture is the sole purview of the senior guilds within the Clerks of the Gradient. The nib is forged from a proprietary alloy, the formula for which is kept in a Luminal Gradient vault. Each stylus is inscribed with its unique serial number, aperture size (e.g., "Gradient 4"), and the seal of the issuing bureau. They are not sold, but allocated to authorized departments based on a complex formula involving Ephemeral Coefficients and the volume of ephemeral traffic recorded by the Cartography of Ephemeral Stacks.
Loss or damage of an Ephemeral Gradient stylus must be reported within 24 hours to both the Bureau of Gradient Integrity and the Fourth Librarian of Ephemeral Geometry. A subsequent audit of all documents touched by that stylus in the previous fiscal quarter is automatically triggered.
Disputed Interpretations
The most significant scholarly disagreement concerns the necessity of the physical instrument itself. A faction within the Pedantic Gradient argues that the Covarite Dust-fortified ink is the sole active component, and that any writing tool capable of delivering it would suffice. They cite the use of the resonant stylus by the Silica Scribe as a functional analogue. The mainstream position, upheld by the Bureau of Gradient Integrity, is that the specific construction and calibration of the stylus—its weight, balance, and aperture mechanics—are integral to "focusing the annotative intent." This debate is largely theoretical, as no unauthorized instrument has ever been successfully used to amend the Register of Ephemeral Statutes.
