Clerks of the Median Line
MS 2914.13 · Guilds, orders and offices
Clerks of the Median Line are a sub-order of the Librarians charged with the precise calibration and verification of central points, both physical and metaphysical, within designated sectors of the Tower. Their primary jurisdictional responsibility is the maintenance of Line Sigma, though their methodologies are applied in other corridors under specific provisions of the Third and Seventh Concordances.
“The Median is not a place, but a condition of perfect operational equilibrium. To find it is to momentarily freeze the Tower’s endless descent into entropy.” — Annex 12, Clarification of Terms, Seventh Concordance
Primary Functions
The Clerks’ duties are bifurcated into two daily rituals of measurement, both conducted along their assigned corridor.
The first is the Recalculation of the Operational Midpoint. Each dawn, a team of three Clerks uses a calibrated silken rope, precisely 1,002 Librarian cubits in length, to physically measure the nominated corridor—typically Line Sigma. They identify the exact geometric center, mark it with a temporary brass tack, and file Form M-7 with the Master Line office. This point, valid only for that solar cycle, is used to align inspection routes and calibrate tram deceleration protocols.
The second is the Cataloguing of Luminous Gradient. Each dusk, a separate team observes the quality of ambient illumination at the newly established midpoint. Using a Standard Lumen for reference, they assign a Gradient value from Alpha (a stark, paper-bleaching white) to Sigma (a profound, text-consuming black). The Median Library Gloom, designated Gradient 5, is the ideal state. This reading, recorded on Form L-12, influences the power allocation to bioluminescent sconces for the following cycle.
Jurisdiction and the Sigma Confluence
While the Clerks operate in several secondary lines, their historic and most documented seat of operations is Line Sigma. Concordance documents, particularly the Reroute Authorization for Line Sigma, grant them oversight of “all points of central confluence” within that corridor. This is held to include the Delta-Sigma Capillary Cluster, a major junction for pneumatic dispatch tubes. Their authority here is occasionally contested by the Clerks of the Unblinking Eye, who monitor tube velocity, leading to protracted disputes over whether a confluence’s ‘midpoint’ refers to its spatial center or its traffic-flow equilibrium. These disputes are settled by Jurist Sigma-1, whose sole jurisdiction is Line Sigma.
Equipment and Iconography
The order is identified by their tools: the aforementioned silken plumb line, a sealed vial of Gradient 5 Gloom, and a worn leather ledger. Their ceremonial garment is a grey tabard bisected by a single, vertical blue line. Senior Clerks are permitted to carry a Rod of Resonance, a tapered brass instrument used to tap structural columns and listen for deviations from expected acoustic symmetry, indicating subsurface shifts that could affect the median.
Notably, the Clerks are the custodians of the original Standard Lumens for Gradients 4 through 6, stored in a climate-controlled vault off Stairwell Sigma-44. All other Gradient standards in the Tower are derivatives of these.
Doctrinal Disputes
A significant schism exists within the order regarding the nature of their primary measurement. The Absolutist school, following the teachings of Alphonsus of the Plumb Line, holds that the daily midpoint is a tangible, absolute truth, and that minor variances are due to measurement error or corridor “breathing.” The Relativist school argues that the midpoint is a theoretical construct made momentarily real through the act of measurement itself, and that the daily ritual is a performative stabilization of reality. This debate became acute following the rerouting of Line Sigma, which, according to Relativist pamphlets, “proved the Median is subject to bureaucratic whim.”
This doctrinal conflict impacts practical operations, particularly concerning the use of Peregrine-Sigma class objects, which regulations state must be operated exclusively on Line Sigma. Absolutists insist they can only cross the certified daily midpoint, while Relativists permit their operation anywhere the midpoint could be, given potential measurement variance.
Interaction with Other Departments
The Clerks’ work is foundational to several key Tower operations. Their certified midpoint data is used by the Functionaries of the Final Line to supervise and certify tram terminuses on the Vertical Tram Line Sigma. Furthermore, the Ink-Scriptorium supply convoys along the Vertical Tram Line are scheduled to pass through corridor midpoints during ‘Gradient Stable’ periods (usually Gradient 4-6) to ensure ideal conditions for ink viscosity. The Clerks also provide quarterly symmetry reports to the Scriptorium of the Final Line, which are consulted during the preparation of especially balanced documents.
