The Midpoint Mirage
MS 7535.07 · Practices and doctrines
The Midpoint Mirage refers to the observable phenomenon, the persistent administrative designation, and the associated bureaucratic protocols concerning the operational centerpoint of the Tower. While numerous theoretical midpoints exist (arithmetic, geometric, gravitational), the Mirage is defined by Concordance 12, Annex γ as “the point from which the distances to the highest confirmed floor and to the lowest confirmed floor are equal, as measured along the primary axis of accession.” Its elusive and shifting nature, coupled with its critical administrative functions, gives the Mirage its name and its institutional complexity.
Physical Manifestation & Location
The Mirage does not occupy a traditional floor. Instead, it is understood to manifest within a non-Euclidean interstitial volume approximately co-located with Floor 1004 and the adjacent T-54 Spiral. Visually, it presents as a sustained optical distortion—a shimmering, vertical column of refracted light approximately two meters in diameter—within the central tram shaft. This column is perceptible from several adjoining galleries and transit platforms. Attempts to physically intersect the column result in no tactile resistance and no measurable temperature change, though subjects report a profound sensation of spatial disorientation. The shimmer’s intensity is catalogued daily by the Clerks of the Median Line on a scale from Alpha (faint) to Sigma (blinding).
Determination & Recalculation
Pursuant to Concordance 7, Clause 904, the Mirage’s official location must be recalculated following any expansion of the Tower’s known bounds. As expeditions consistently report new upper and lower floors, the Mirage consequently migrates. The duty of its determination falls to the aforementioned Clerks of the Median Line, a sub-order of the Librarians. Their methodology involves a calibrated silk rope, a theodolite inscribed with paradoxical angles, and a three-hour litany of verification chants. The result is a daily Certificate of Medianity, filed with the Central Index and posted at major transit hubs, such as Spiral 899.
This process is not without dispute. Concordance 22 explicitly challenges the rope method, advocating for a calculation based on the “weight of recorded knowledge” rather than physical distance. This doctrinal schism means there are, at any given time, at least two competing sets of coordinates for the Mirage, each backed by contradictory ordinance.
Administrative Significance
The Mirage serves several key bureaucratic functions. It is the notional point from which all Satellite Indexes calculate their relational shelving schemas. Permit jurisdictions for Oblique Access often use proximity to the Mirage as a boundary condition. Furthermore, the Ledger Halls on Floor 303 use phase shifts in the Mirage’s shimmer to regulate the quarterly audit cycles for non-existent fiscal instruments.
Most significantly, the space immediately surrounding the Mirage is the only location where certain classes of inter-floor documents can be legally ratified. The execution of a Cross-Continuum Annex, for instance, requires the signatures of three witnessing Librarians to be applied within the visible aura of the shimmer, a procedure detailed in Concordance 41, Clause 17.
Related Phenomena & Debates
The Mirage is often conflated with, but is distinct from, the “Sanctum’s Heart,” a term used in older cartography for the administrative center of Floor 301. Scholarly debate, particularly between the archivists of Floor 317: The Parallax Halls and those of Floor 412, centers on whether the Mirage is a symptom of spatial folding or the cause of it. The so-called “Echo Argument” posits that phenomena observed in Floor 307: The Cabinet of Echoes are resonant harmonics of the Mirage’s foundational displacement.
A persistent, though officially discouraged, theory suggests the Mirage is not a midpoint at all, but a temporary aperture or a stalled ontological event related to the construction—or continuous dissolution—of Floor 404. Proponents of this view, often found conducting unsanctioned measurements in the Canted Halls of Floor 207, cite inconsistent luminal decay rates as evidence.
Protocols for Observation
Direct observation by non-accredited personnel is regulated under the Median Viewing Ordinances. A permit, obtainable from the Clerk-Registrar on Floor 909, is required for watches exceeding five minutes. Unauthorized gazing is punishable by reassignment to spectral shelving duties in the lower Floor 440 the Gilded Aviary, where the ambient chronal distortions are said to compound the disorienting effects of the Mirage itself. All observers, permitted or otherwise, are required to file a Form M-7 (Perceptual Deviation Log) within twelve hours of viewing, contributing to the ever-growing archive of the Mirage’s elusive character.
