Chalk of Permanent Marking

MS 7932.26 · Objects and instruments

Chalk of Permanent Marking is the collective designation for inscriptive substances within The Tower that resist erasure, fading, or revision by ordinary means, and that bind a recorded subject to its place in the archive. The category is held distinct from temporary luminous compounds such as Luminous Chalk and from void-tolerant preparations such as Void-Chalk, though all three are stored under the jurisdiction of the Chalk Vault. The principal member of the category is Memoria Chalk, whose interaction with Luminous Chalk produces a Protocol-Bound Annotation recognized by the Directorate of Luminance on Floor 8 the Chalk Halls.

Definition and Scope

The term "Chalk of Permanent Marking" appears first in the Second Recension of the Inscriptive Canons, which defines it as "any chalk, paste, or compressed dust whereby an inscription, once laid, shall not be undone by breath, buffet, or the ordinary passage of wardens" (Second Recension of the Inscriptive Canons, Clause 9). The Third Concordance narrows the definition to substances "certified by a Directorate and held in a sealed chamber," thereby excluding several folk preparations of Floor 1024 that the Adjudication of the Chalk-Dust Hands had previously tolerated. Scholars of Inscription note that the two Concordances cannot both govern the same floor, and the matter remains referred to the Office of Reconciled Margins.

Composition and Issuance

Memoria Chalk is a non-luminous formulation used for inscribing permanent procedural and administrative sigils within The Tower, preventing Materialization from Record. The Chalk Vault contains the last documented reserve of unadulterated Memoria Chalk, held in a single piece of foundational chalk within a sealed chamber on Floor 1024. Issue is governed by the Standard Brackets Document, which permits withdrawal only under seal of the Permanent Glow office. Luminous Chalk of other grades is excluded from the category despite its endurance, as its light fails at eleven hours and its mark does not prevent revision.

Historical Incident: The Winter Marking of Spiral 17

In the cold winter of Cycle 14,901, a clerk of the The Marking office, one Hedron of the Lower Aperture, applied Memoria Chalk to a non-material surface on Floor 8 the Chalk Halls contrary to the Chalk Convention of 14,712, which mandated a single chalk stroke on the eastern face of enumerated items. The resulting sigil persisted through three subsequent recensions and was held by the Wayfinders to obstruct a temporary route. The Adjudication of the Chalk-Dust Hands ruled that "a permanent mark laid upon an impermanent medium is nonetheless permanent, and the error is the medium's, not the chalk's" (Adjudication of the Chalk-Dust Hands, Finding 3). Hedron was assigned to 7 Script transcription for nineteen cycles.

Scholarly Disagreement

A enduring dispute concerns whether Ceremonial Inks may be counted as Chalk of Permanent Marking. The Third Concordance excludes them by silence; the Second Recension of the Inscriptive Canons admits "any substance of reserved composition." The Office of Reconciled Margins has issued no ruling, and clerks of Floor 1024 continue to apply Superscribed Annex Delta as though both were valid. The Directorate of Luminance has declined to certify inks under the Standard Brackets Document, citing the Permanent Glow precedent of Cycle 13,088.

Prohibitions and Maintenance

The Chalk Vault forbids the removal of more than one stick-equivalent per visiting Librarian, and no visitor may strike the eastern face of the vault door more than once per decade. Surfaces marked with Memoria Chalk are not to be counted among the holdings of Void-Chalk, as the two interact poorly and produce a smear readable only under Luminous Chalk grade unknown to the Floor 8 the Chalk Halls. The Wayfinders are reminded that temporary sigil-marking remains their prescribed use of Luminous Chalk and does not confer permanence under the The Marking office's reading of the Chalk Convention of 14,712.

"A permanent mark is a decision the Tower has made and will not unmake; all else is weather."

— Permanent Glow, Cyclic Pronouncement 11
