Lexical Fossilization
MS 8725.98 · Practices and doctrines
Lexical Fossilization is the process by which a catalogued word, term, or designation hardens into an unalterable form and thereafter resists revision, reclassification, or removal. It is distinguished from ordinary archival fixity by the presence of a mineral-like accretion, known as shelldrift, which forms on the surface of the term and cannot be abraded by any method the Librarians have sanctioned. The condition is named in Concordance 4, Clause 22.7, which charges the Academy with "the prevention of procedural fossilization" and, by a drafting oversight no one has seen fit to correct, nowhere defines the term it forbids.
Lexical Fossilization is not to be confused with Lexical Inversion, which is a state a catalogued subject should not suffer from during a Lexical Audit, nor with the ambient contamination catalogued under Sub-Lexical Humours. A fossilized term is stable, legible, and entirely present; it has simply stopped being revisable, and the Guild of Lexical Scrutineers regards this as the more serious fault of the two.
Signs and measurement
Fossilization is graded on the Hearthby scale, from I to IX, by the depth to which a standard probe of soft brass will not penetrate the term's surface. Grade I is a faint dulling of the entry's ink. Grade V, the threshold at which the Office of the Dean of Lexical Purity requires notification, is reached when the term's definition can no longer be amended without the amendment appearing, on the page, as an erasure.
Grades above VII are rare and are handled by the Sub-committee on Lexical Integrity. The highest confirmed instance remains the floor-name Antechamber of the Unreturned, graded VIII in the winter of the year the catalogue records as 3,041, after a recension attempted to shorten it to Antechamber and the shortened form was found the following morning to have reverted, with the original wording restored in a hand nobody on the recension panel recognized.
Dispute over cause
The Guild of Lexical Scrutineers holds that fossilization originates in the term itself, and that its proper remedy is the Principle of Lexical Containment, applied early, before shelldrift takes hold. This position is set out at length in Concordance 199, Annex δ: Procedures for Sub-lexical Disputes, which treats fossilization as a species of sub-lexical dispute and assigns it to the ordinary Lexical Audit.
The Registry of Non-Lexical Phonemes dissents. Its position, maintained since the dispute of the Nine Shelves, is that a term does not fossilize; the reading of the term fossilizes, and the term is merely the stone that forms around it. On this account the correct instrument is not containment but the standard taxonomy of Sub-Lexical Humours, and the Lexical Audit is the wrong proceeding altogether. The Registry has never been overruled, and the Guild has never conceded.
"Where a term has ceased to admit amendment, the fault lies with the reader's habits, not the term's substance; and to contain the term is to leave the habit unexamined."
— Registry of Non-Lexical Phonemes, Memorandum on the Nine Shelves, second recension
Both bodies cite Lexical Inherency in support of their view, which the Dean of Lexical Purity has described in a marginal note as "the least useful thing either of them has done."
The Antechamber incident
Fossilization entered common administrative use after the Antechamber incident, when a Pre-Dawn Evacuation of the ninth gallery was delayed forty minutes because the evacuation order could not be issued: the phrase leave by the north stair had fossilized at Grade VI and every attempted correction printed the same three words. The gallery was cleared eventually by a clerk reading the order aloud from memory. The clerk, Wenneck of the Fourth Scriptorium, petitioned for recognition of the hazard and was refused on the grounds that no hazard had been named in advance.
Wenneck's grievance is preserved in the Scriptorium's register and is still cited in Lexical Purity Review proceedings, generally by whichever party wishes to establish that the Tower has been slow before.
Notable fossilized holdings
The following entries are currently under standing observation and may not be amended without the countersign of two Librarians:
- Antechamber of the Unreturned — Grade VIII, floor designation, under observation since 3,041.
- North stair — Grade VI, evacuation notice, sealed and reproduced by hand.
- Concordance 4, Clause 22.7 — Grade V, phrase "procedural fossilization," unamendable and therefore still undefined.
- Do not descend past this landing — Grade VII, stairwell notice, floor number not recorded.
Prevention
Prevention consists chiefly of reading a term aloud at intervals, so that the reading does not settle, and of amending each entry at least once per generation whether or not the amendment improves it. The Sub-committee on Lexical Integrity maintains this schedule and reports that compliance is poor above the twelfth gallery, where entries are amended rarely and, in the committee's phrasing, "defend themselves."
Visitors are reminded that fossilized terms are not to be handled. The shelldrift is brittle and the fragments are catalogued separately.
