Lexical Audit
MS 3749.39 · Practices and doctrines
Lexical Audit is the official bureaucratic process for verifying the material and conceptual integrity of a designated archival volume or shelf-section according to the principles of Lexical Inherency. Governed by Clause 7 of the Great Audit's procedural annexes, the practice seeks to confirm that a catalogued subject retains its defined reality within the Tower and has not suffered from Lexical Inversion, semantic drift, or ambient contamination from Sub-Lexical Humours.
Purpose and Mandate
The primary purpose of a Lexical Audit is prophylactic. Per Decree 14 of the Third Concordance, "that which is written shall remain as written, lest the foundation of knowing become unsound." The audit process is therefore not an investigation of truth in an absolute sense, but a verification of internal consistency and ontological stability. A successful audit results in a Certificate of Coherent Reality, which must be filed with both the originating department and the Office of Granular Audit. A failed audit triggers a Contradiction Audit and, in severe cases, a quarantine of the affected holdings under the authority of the Dean of Lexical Purity.
Standard Procedure
The protocol, as refined during the Great Audit of 2,001 AT, is meticulous. A team of no fewer than three accredited auditors—drawn from the Guild of Lexical Scrutineers or, for high-priority cases, the Dean's own office—is assembled. The process unfolds in seven stages:
- Pre-Audit Documentation: Review of all prior audit certificates, amendment logs, and cross-referential citations.
- Ambient Measurement: Deployment of calibrated tuning forks and humours-catchers to detect levels of Sub-Lexical Humours, particularly Ambient Regret, which can precede lexical decay.
- Textual Inherency Test: Auditors read passages aloud in succession, noting any perceived fluctuations in descriptive solidity or the emergence of paradoxical imagery.
- Cross-Reference Verification: Every wikilink and cited holding is checked for its own current audit status.
- Acoustic Purity Scan: A report is requested from the Registry of Non-Lexical Phonemes on any anomalous acoustic signatures, which they argue can be a precursor to spatial instability.
- Deliberation & Finding: Auditors confer and issue a majority ruling.
- Post-Audit Filings: Documentation is submitted, with copies to the Pre-Audit Documentation archive for the next cycle.
Failure Criteria and Outcomes
A Lexical Audit can fail on several grounds, each with prescribed consequences. The most common is Inherency Lapse, where the described entity demonstrates a measurable loss of self-consistency (e.g., a described chamber having two contradictory floor plans). This necessitates a Pathway Audit. Acoustic Contamination, signified by a report from the Registry of Non-Lexical Phonemes, leads to review by the Chamber of Acoustic Purity. The most severe failure is Active Inversion, where the subject exhibits properties of its own logical opposite, triggering immediate quarantine and a full Reality Audit.
Concordance LXII, Amendment 9: "An inverted lemma shall be considered a vacancy in the archive, and the space it occupies shall be treated as both full and empty until a purification rite is performed by the Physickers of the Deep Font."
Scholarly and Bureaucratic Disputes
Significant disagreement exists regarding the scope and philosophy of the audit. The traditionalist school, led by the Office of the Dean, holds that the process is purely defensive, a "bulwark against the silent erosion of sense." A reformist faction within the Guild of Lexical Scrutineers argues that the audit itself, through intense scrutiny, can induce minor instances of Lexical Inversion via the Doctrine of Coincidental Resonance, thereby creating the instabilities it seeks to find. This debate is most active during the annual review of the Illumination Audit results.
Furthermore, the Registry of Non-Lexical Phonemes maintains that their acoustic scans should be the primary failure criterion, positing that semantic decay is always preceded by sub-lexical frequency shifts. This claim is routinely challenged by textual purists who consider phonemic data to be merely corroborative.
Related Audit Types
The Lexical Audit is the cornerstone of a larger audit ecology. It is distinct from, but often preparatory to, several other formal reviews:
- Pathway Audit
- Investigates spatial and navigational inconsistencies within catalogued locations.
- Reality Audit
- A deep, often destructive examination of a holding's fundamental postulates, reserved for crisis-level failures.
- Silent Audit
- An unannounced audit conducted at random intervals, the protocols for which are themselves a classified holding.
- Contradiction Audit
- Invoked when two or more audited holdings make mutually exclusive claims about the same subject.
