Symmetry Audit
MS 1313.33 · Practices and doctrines
Symmetry Audit is the formal, biennial procedure for verifying the precise balance between an archival entity and its designated inverse or counterpart, as mandated by the Symmetry Edicts. Conducted by the Directorate of Form and Symmetry, the Audit’s primary purpose is to measure, quantify, and mitigate imbalances in the structural, categorical, or conceptual properties of the Tower’s holdings, preventing the accrual of metaphysical asymmetry, which is theorized to generate non-catalogable phenomena.
Procedure and Schedule
The Audit occurs every two years, its timing determined by the Fifth Algorithmic Calendar, with fieldwork typically initiated in the month of Unfolding Wax. The process is governed by a tripartite framework: the Inventory Phase, the Calibration Phase, and the Reconciliation Phase. During the Inventory Phase, field auditors from the Directorate of Form and Symmetry visit designated sites of known symmetrical instability, such as the Spiral Staircase of Presumed Symmetry and Floor 347 the Shelf of Broken Symmetry, to take core samples, vibrational readings, and dimensional baselines.
The Calibration Phase involves the mathematical analysis of these field data against the archival ideal. Primary tools include the Symmetrical Deviation Index (SDI) and the Symmetry Quotient (ΣQ), calculations performed on the Harmonic Differential Engines. Any entity with an SDI exceeding 0.07 or a ΣQ variance beyond ±2.5% is flagged for Reconciliation. This final phase may involve physical re-alignment of objects, re-cataloguing of documents, or, in persistent cases, the application of compensatory asymmetries elsewhere to restore systemic balance, a practice detailed in Annex of the Audit Protocol.
Audit Scope and Notable Findings
The Audit’s remit is defined by Concordance 3.14.15, which lists seven categories of symmetrical concern: spatial, temporal, lexical, numeric, chromatic, tonal, and conceptual. A sub-audit, the Lexical Audit, is often conducted concurrently to assess textual balance. The most famous ongoing subject of the Symmetry Audit is the biennial review of Potential Palindromes on Floor 9,002, where strings of glyphs suspected of reading identically forward and backward are monitored for "tipping" into actuality.
Notable historical findings include the 112th Audit’s confirmation of a persistent leftward lean in the Spiral Staircase of Presumed Symmetry, requiring the installation of 47 counterweighted volumes on its eastern side, and the 98th Audit’s isolation of the Symmetry of Absent Footnotes as a viable archival principle. The 121st Audit report (Archive Ref: SA/121/Γ) famously catalogued 1,442 instances of "deliberate unbalance" in musical scores and textile patterns, leading to their sequestration in a dedicated annex.
Governmental Context
The Symmetry Audit exists within a complex hierarchy of oversight mechanisms. It is a subsidiary event of the decades-long Great Audit, though it operates on a far more frequent cycle. Its findings are routinely cross-referenced with those of the Pathway Audit, the Provenance Audit, and the Annual Illumination Audit. Disputes regarding Audit findings or jurisdictional overlap are adjudicated by the Office of Granular Audit, which may call for a Contradiction Audit if procedural inconsistencies are alleged.
Chain of custody for all materials sampled during the Audit is maintained via Form BIA-1Λ, which travels with the sample from the field auditor to the receiving archivist. Final reports are filed with the Clerk of the Unseen Balance and become binding precedent for the following two-year period, unless superseded by an emergency edict from the High Scriptorium.
Scholarly Disputes
A central academic controversy concerns the ontological status of the imbalances the Audit measures. The predominant school, led by the Directorate of Form and Symmetry, holds a purely mathematical model: asymmetry is a quantifiable deviation from a perfect formal ideal, and the Register is a tool for correction. A rival view, advanced by the Guild of Emergent Patterns, argues that the Audit creates the imbalances it purports to measure through the act of observation, and that the so-called "compensatory asymmetries" are in fact the primary metaphysical pollutants. This debate is most acute regarding conceptual symmetry audits, where the standard of a "designated inverse" is often a matter of interpretative Concordances, which famously contradict one another.
Furthermore, the Silent Audit faction within the archival community questions the necessity of the Symmetry Audit’s public reporting, arguing that announcing a found asymmetry effectively doubles its potency. They advocate for all findings to be sealed and addressed via covert Reality Audit protocols, a proposal thus far rejected by the Directorate of Form and Symmetry on grounds of procedural transparency outlined in Clause 7.
