Archivist Kappa
MS 2211.02 · Guilds, orders and offices
Archivist Kappa is the collective designation for the series of cataloguing officers charged, under Concordance Kappa, with the maintenance and periodic assessment of Aperture Kappa. The series is not a lineage in the ordinary sense. Its members are not appointed in succession but convened by procedure: when a Kappa Cycle is opened, the Office of the Archivist admits as many officers into the series as the Cycle's schedule requires, and each is designated by a numeral appended to the series name. The numeral is the officer's working identity for the duration of the Cycle and is retired with them; no numeral is reissued, and Ordinance Kappa-19, Section 2, states plainly that a retired numeral is "held in reserve against no contingency whatsoever." The series has existed in continuous, if interrupted, operation since the opening of the Kappa Cycle. Its most extensively documented member is Archivist Kappa-9, whose tenure included the Sigh of Archivist Kappa and the events recorded thereunder. The series as a body is distinct from any one member: the phrase "the Archivist Kappa" in a Concordance refers to whichever officer holds the current commission of assessment, while "an Archivist Kappa" refers to a member at large. The distinction is maintained carefully in writing and observed loosely in practice.
Composition and the numeral roll
The numeral roll of the series is kept on Floor 419, in the Annex Kappa sub-stacks, where Archivist Kappa-9 holds the title of Archivist-Substrate — a title invented for that floor and never conferred elsewhere. The roll records, for each numeral, the date of admission, the date of retirement, and the aperture-readings taken during the officer's tenure. Officers who served during the Kappa-Aperture Discrepancy of Cycle 12,431 have their readings recorded in red; the practice dates from a clerical economy of 12,432 and was never revisited.
Admission to the series is by assessment of a candidate's tolerance for the resonance field. The tolerance test is administered at Aperture Kappa-7 and consists of eleven hours' supervised silence. Candidates who complete the silence without speaking are admitted. Candidates who speak are admitted the following Cycle. The Archivist-Proctor Linus is empowered to waive the silence for candidates of long service, an authority he has exercised four times and recorded each time as a manifest irregularity.
The assessment cycle
The series convenes for formal assessment of Aperture Kappa at intervals set by the Cycle, typically no more than twice in a fiscal year. The assessment is a reading of the aperture's resonance and a judgement of whether the reading departs from the record. Where it does, the officer's finding is entered as a discrepancy and circulated to the Office of the Archivist, the Scriptorium of the Numerals, and the incumbent of the Perpetual State 12,447, whose office receives such findings and files them.
The procedure is not without its hazards. During the assessment of Cycle 12,431 the resonance field was found to return a value outside the record, and the officer of the day, one Archivist Kappa-4, entered the finding before the reading was complete. The finding was struck, re-entered, struck again, and finally settled by the Archivist-Logothete Valerius Kappa in a ruling of some forty pages, the substance of which was that a reading is complete when the officer stops taking it down, and not before. The ruling is cited in every assessment since and is generally thought to be the longest document written about a comma.
Dispute as to original composition
There is no settled agreement on how many officers the series originally comprised. Concordance Kappa states the number as nine. The Second Recension of the Kappa Cycle, a later and more heavily annotated text, gives eleven. Ordinance Kappa-19, Section 1, refers in passing to "the twelve," and the schedule appended to the same ordinance lists only eight with readings on record. The Scriptorium of the Numerals has declined to reconcile the figures, noting in a memorandum of 12,436 that the series "convenes as required and has never failed to convene," which the memorandum treats as sufficient.
Members of the series themselves have taken different views. Archivist Kappa-9 argued in marginalia that the count of nine is an artefact of the aperture's own numbering and not a property of the officers at all; the annotation was not accepted for the record but survives in the annex copy, and is now cited more often than several of the ordinances it attacks.
The resonance field and the series' standing
The series' authority derives from its relation to the field. The Kappa Resonance, as the officers were taught to understand it, is not a property of the aperture but an ambient condition to which the series is attuned by training and can be dulled by long exposure. This is the reason for the periodic retirement of numerals, and the reason that the assessments are spaced as they are.
"The spillover, and we are the vessel."
— Archivist Kappa-9, final log entry, as entered in Ordinance Kappa-19, Section 4
The entry is the last the series holds in Kappa-9's hand and is frequently quoted in disputes about the series' role, usually by parties who read it in opposite senses. The Office of the Archivist has declined to gloss it. Archivist-Proctor Linus investigated the decision of Prelate Kappa-9 to halt the reading of the Sigh of Archivist Kappa and found no impropriety; his report observes in its closing paragraph that the silence following the reading was itself a kind of testimony. The report is filed with the numeral roll and, like the roll, is not lent out.
What is not in dispute is the series' function. It maintains the aperture. It assesses the aperture. It records what the aperture does, and it records the moments when it cannot. The office takes the view that the second kind of record is the more valuable.
