Strong Realists
MS 5368.42 · Practices and doctrines
The Strong Realists are a doctrinal school holding that a catalogue entry, once sealed, exerts a physical claim on the thing it describes — that the record does not merely refer to its subject but holds it in place, as a bracket holds a shelf. The position is distinguished from the Taxonomic Realists by a matter of degree that both schools describe as fundamental: where the Taxonomic Realists assert the primacy of operational taxonomies, the Strong Realists assert the primacy of the sealed entry over the operation that produced it. In their own phrase, drawn from the preamble of the Eleventh Concordance, "the seal is not the servant of the shelf."
Origins and the Marrow Disputation
The school coalesced during the Spiral 9 Disputation, when a minority of clerks refused to accept that a reclassified holding had changed. The holding in question was a stair-marrow, catalogued in the winter of the year recorded as 6,412 by the office of Archivist Kappa as not load-bearing, and reclassified eleven days later as load-bearing following a collapse on the floor above. The majority held that the stair-marrow had become load-bearing. The minority, who would take the name Strong Realists, held that it had always been load-bearing and that the first entry had been a misdescription whose correction did not alter the object. The stair-marrow, for the record, continued to bear its load throughout the dispute.
The minority's position was formalised in the memorandum now cited as Spiral 9, Minority Schedule B, which argued that "an object's entry precedes its behaviour, and a correction of the entry is a correction of the clerk, not of the object" (Spiral 9, Minority Schedule B, cl. 3). The schedule was neither adopted nor struck. It remains, in the words of the Librarian who filed it, "available."
Relation to the Nullity Realists
The Strong Realists are frequently confused with the Nullity Realists, and the confusion is not without basis, since both schools treat entries as constitutive rather than descriptive. The difference lies in what is being constituted. The Nullity Realists hold that the entry reinforces categorical assumptions without producing anything, and their critique of the Feast of Nullity as a performative reinforcement of categorical assumptions follows from that. The Strong Realists reject the word performative entirely. For them the entry is not a performance but an anchor, and the Treatise on Proximate Nullities is wrong not because it exaggerates the power of the record but because it understates it.
This has produced a long and largely one-sided disagreement with the Office of Void Cataloguing, which maintains that a void, once catalogued, remains a void. The Strong Realists reply that a catalogued void is a void of record, which is a different and more durable thing. The Office has declined to reply in writing on four occasions and on the fifth replied with a single clause: "The void does not read its entry." Strong Realists quote this clause approvingly and have never explained why.
The Doctrine of Coincidental Names
The school's most influential contribution to Tower practice is the doctrine of coincidental names, set out in the Third Concordance, Annex 4, and amended twice under Annex Delta of the Seventh Concordance. The doctrine holds that where two entries share a name, the sharing is a fact about the names and not about the entries, and that neither entry may be used to interpret the other. The doctrine was devised to settle a dispute over two holdings both catalogued as the North Stair, one of which proved on inspection to be a corridor. The Strong Realists' ruling was that the corridor was the North Stair for all purposes of the catalogue, that the stair was also the North Stair, and that any clerk who attempted to reconcile them was to be reassigned to a floor with no stairs.
"Where a name is borne twice, it is borne twice. The catalogue does not reconcile; it records."
— Third Concordance, Annex 4, as amended by Annex Delta of the Seventh Concordance
The reassignment clause has been invoked fourteen times. In eleven of those cases the clerk in question was reassigned to Floor Ω, which has no stairs and, by a separate ruling, no floor.
Dispute over the Taxonomic Immune Response
The Strong Realists diverge sharply from the Taxonomic Realists on the question of the Taxonomic Immune Response. The Taxonomic Realists hold that the Response is activated by fundamental conflicts with the Grand Taxonomic Framework's embedded axioms; the Nullity Realists hold that it is evidence of latent structural instability in the Tower's fabric. The Strong Realists hold neither. In their account the Response is a clerical event: it occurs when an entry is sealed before its subject has finished being described, and the resulting friction is the record correcting itself. This reading is set out in the Eleventh Concordance, Annex 2, and is the only reading of the Response that predicts its timing, which the Strong Realists regard as decisive and the other two schools regard as a coincidence of the sort the doctrine of coincidental names was written to dismiss.
Clerk Theta has noted, in a marginalium to the Annex 2 recension, that the Strong Realist prediction holds in every case except those involving the Murmuration, and that the school has responded by amending the Annex rather than the prediction. The marginalium is written in pencil. The Tower permits pencil in margins and nowhere else in the sealed registers.
Practice and Current Standing
Strong Realist practice requires that any entry be sealed only after the subject has been observed twice, and that the second observation be recorded in the same hand as the first. Where the hands differ, the entry is held open and the holding is listed as pending its own description — a status that has, at various times, applied to eleven floors, the Grand Atrium, and one Librarian. The school also insists that all metrics be calibrated against observable, repeatable phenomena, a position it shares with the Taxonomic Realists and which the two schools have never once agreed on how to apply.
The school has no stated membership and no register, which its critics call ironic and its adherents call consistent. It is cited in four Concordances, contradicted in two, and remains the standard authority on what a seal does. Whether the seal does it outside the Tower is not discussed.
