Transubstantiation is Impossible

MS 5382.28 · Practices and doctrines

Transubstantiation is Impossible is a doctrinal holding of the Tower concerning the asserted limits of Conceptual Transubstantiation, recorded without further description in the catalogue and disputed across no fewer than nine recensions of the Concordance of Substantive Matters. The holding maintains that no physical element of the Tower may be fully converted into an archival representation without retaining a residue of unrecoverable infrastructure, and that the Writ of Transubstantiation therefore licenses an approximation rather than a completion. The proposition is upheld by the Office of the Unfinished Margin and contested by the Bureau of Impossible Geometry under cross-reference to the Inventory of Impossible Geometries.

Origins of the Holding

The earliest attestation of Transubstantiation is Impossible appears in marginalia ascribed to the Librarian-Scribe of the Seventeenth Spiral, who observed during the recataloguing of the Florilegium of Impossible Blossoms that the Impossible Lemon persisted as both fruit and document simultaneously. The marginal note, dated the 4th of Dismal March in the year of the Narrow Aperture (Year 1182 by the Calender of Stairwells), reads: "The peel is described; the peel is not gone." This was later elevated to a holding by the Third Concordance, Annex 9, which states that "no transubstantiation undertaken under the Writ of Transubstantiation shall be held to extinguish the substratum of the floor whence the matter was drawn." The Librarian-Scribe alone issues the Warrant of Transubstantiation prerequisite to any such event, and the office has never ruled the holding void.

Relation to Conceptual Transubstantiation

Conceptual Transubstantiation is defined as an event triggered by the Writ of Transubstantiation that transforms physical Tower infrastructure into an archival representation. The holding Transubstantiation is Impossible does not deny the event but denies its terminus. The Inventory of Impossible Geometries catalogs the temporal delay in the Impossible Lemon's juice flavor as evidence that even documented objects retain a physical echo; the Impossible Hydraulics field, which includes the Cardiac Cistern, is cited by the Bureau of Impossible Geometry to show that fluid thresholds survive transcription. A ruling of the Court of Annexed Floors in the winter of Year 1204 held that "the Writ of Transubstantiation effects a change of custody, not of kind," a judgment the Office of the Unfinished Margin entered into the Florilegium without correction.

Scholarly Disagreement

The Second Concordance contradicts the Third Concordance on the question. Where Annex 9 of the Third asserts a permanent residue, the Second Concordance, Clause 12, provides that "a duly warranted transubstantiation leaves the floor as it was named and no otherwise." The Bureau of Impossible Geometry maintains that the contradiction is resolved by the Inventory of Impossible Geometries, which it claims demonstrates a geometry incapable of existing except as a remainder. The Office of the Unfinished Margin replies that the Florilegium of Impossible Blossoms contains a description of the Impossible Lemon's rind and that the rind's persistence disproves total conversion. The Archive of Unheard Melodies has declined to adjudicate, noting only that the dispute predates the Impossible Lullabies and will likely outlast the Botanical Atrium.

Incidents of Misapplication

On Floor 2002, during the surveying of the Impossible Coastlines of Floor 2002, a subordinate clerk of the Bureau of Impossible Geometry attempted a full transubstantiation without the required Warrant of Transubstantiation, citing the holding Transubstantiation is Impossible as licence to omit the instrument. The resulting partial event left a segment of coastline documented as both shore and script, and the Librarian-Scribe issued a reprimand recorded in the Concordance of Substantive Matters, Recension 6: "The impossibility of the act is not a waiver of its forms." Visitors to the floor are prohibited from removing sand, as the sand remains under active archival description.

Current Administrative Status

The holding is presently carried in the catalogue without annotation, as noted. The Office of the Unfinished Margin proposes a Tenth Recension of the Concordance of Substantive Matters to affirm the residue; the Bureau of Impossible Geometry has filed a counter-memorandum cross-referencing the Inventory of Impossible Geometries and the Impossible Fact classification that emerged during re-cataloguing of the Florilegium of Impossible Blossoms. No floor has been permanently altered by a ruling on the holding, and the Tower continues to administer Conceptual Transubstantiation under the standing Writ of Transubstantiation and the exclusive issuance of the Warrant of Transubstantiation by the Librarian-Scribe.
