Void-Chalk
MS 3402.34 · Objects and instruments
Void-Chalk is a specialized marking substance, distinct from standard luminous or foundational chalks, formulated for temporary inscription on surfaces with high void-saturation. Its primary application is the procedural demarcation of Sentinel Void perimeters during re-certification surveys and within designated Void Annexes.
Composition and Properties
Void-Chalk is a proprietary composite of micronized Proto-Silvanus Aggregates suspended in a binder of clarified Void-Gall. The inclusion of the aggregates, typically sourced from the Silvanus Void, provides the chalk with a degree of inertial stability when applied to void-saturated substrates. Unlike Luminous Chalk, it emits no light; instead, its presence is registered by a mild local damping of ambient Alban Resonances, detectable with standard surveyor's palettes. A standard stick measures 15 cm in length and 1 cm in diameter, as per the specifications in Annex VII of Concordance 44.
Regulated Usage
The use of Void-Chalk is strictly governed by protocols maintained by the Office of Void Integrity. Its application is mandated in two key contexts:
- Provisional Perimeter Marking: Prior to the permanent inscription of a Void-Gall line, a survey team must first outline the proposed boundary in Void-Chalk. This provisional line must remain undisturbed for a minimum of 72 hours to allow for void-stability assessments.
- Internal Annex Notation: Within an active Void Annex, all procedural notes, item numbers, or hazard warnings must be made exclusively with Void-Chalk on the annex’s interior walls. The chalk’s markings naturally dissipate within 14 days, ensuring the annex’s internal state is not permanently altered by clerical activity.
Unauthorized possession or use of Void-Chalk outside these contexts is a Class 3 Procedural Infraction.
The Weighing Paradox
A point of persistent technical and philosophical dispute involves the behavior of Void-Chalk during Void-Weighing. Due to its void-saturated composition, an unused stick of Void-Chalk registers a negative mass of approximately -2.3 granules when measured with Void Calipers. However, once used to mark a void-saturated surface, the calipers often register a neutral or even slightly positive mass for the marked line itself. The Clerks of the Balanced Void maintain that this is a measurement artifact caused by the chalk's interaction with the substrate's latent void-field. Scholars of the Proceduralist School, citing the Adjudication of the Chalk-Dust Hands, argue it represents a genuine transference of "procedural mass" from the act of notation, a concept not yet fully reconciled with the standard void-mass framework.
Supply and Procurement
Manufacture of Void-Chalk is a monopoly granted to the Nomenclature Guild, which operates the sole sanctioned production crucible on Floor 899 (The Inverted Foundry). Procurement requires a Form V-7b "Request for Ephemeral Demarcation Materials," approved by both a floor archivist and a representative of the Office of Void Integrity. Issued sticks are serialized and must be returned, or their fully dissipated remnants presented, upon completion of the authorized task. The Guild's records from the past century show no variance in the annual production output, which has led to speculation that the supply is not manufactured but redistributed from a fixed, non-depleting source.
Related Artifacts and Incidents
The relationship between Void-Chalk and other chalk-based substances in the Tower is explicitly non-hierarchical. Concordance 17, Clause 8, states: "Void-Chalk holds no authority over Luminous Chalk, nor does it derive from the Chalk Vault; it is a tool of procedure, not of foundation." This clause is widely believed to have been drafted in response to the incident on Floor 719 (Floor 719) involving the Miletus Fragment, where an attempt to use Void-Chalk to correct a luminous sigil resulted in a temporary localized paradox. The resulting stain, designated "Residue 719-Δ," is kept under quartz and is weighed annually as part of the void-integrity protocols.
