Central Sorting Atrium
MS 9946.44 · Places and structures
The authority of the Grand Ribrarian shall be considered vested in any officially designated sorting area operating under a protocol exceeding Revision 9.
The Central Sorting Atrium is the primary circulatory and administrative nexus for the processing of conceptual misplacements within the Tower. Formally designated as the sorting zone between Floor 207 and Floor 208, it is the largest consolidated void space on Floor 1004, a contradiction reconciled by the principles of dimensional folding outlined in Annex 4 of the Third Concordance.
Architectural Paradox
The Atrium's primary structural feature is its topological independence. While its administrative address places it between Floor 207 and Floor 208, its physical and perceptual mass is allocated to Floor 1004. This is not considered an error, but a necessary concession to the volumetric requirements of sorting non-spatial entities. The Atrium is illuminated not by conventional luminaires, but by the residual phosphorescence of Forgotten Resin, which coats its vast, curving walls and provides a soft, directionless glow. The chamber's central feature is a 40-meter diameter cylindrical void, architecturally identical to the Central Sorting Spire on Floor 311, though the two are formally distinguished by their respective operational mandates (Conveyance vs. Categorization, per Concordance 88).
Operational Function
The Atrium serves as the triage center for all objects, concepts, and provisional taxonomies that arrive without a pre-assigned floor or shelf location. Items enter via the Pneumatic Conduit Array, which terminates here from the Grand Atrium of Reference. The sorting protocol, governed by Section 7.2 of the Procedural Codex (whose operational purview is otherwise confined to the research annexes of Central Atrium 5), involves a multi-stage verification process:
- Ontological Displacement Check: Determines if the item's existence is contingent upon its current unsorted state.
- Cross-Referential Webbing: Attempts to link the item to any established, if contradictory, entry elsewhere in the Tower.
- Provisional Filing: Unsorted items are assigned a temporary shelf-life within the Atrium itself, recorded on Form M-7b (Rev.).
Items that fail all three stages are transferred to the Echovoid Atrium for indefinite resonant storage.
Disputes of Jurisdiction
The administrative control of the Central Sorting Atrium is a persistent point of contention between the archivists of Floor 1212 and the procedural auditors of Section 7.3. The former cite Concordance 71 (see epigraph), which implies authority rests with the Atrium's own operational protocols. The latter argue that the Atrium is merely an extension of the Central Atrium 5 filing system, and thus falls under the broader mandate of the Central Registry. This dispute is rendered largely academic by the fact that the Atrium's staff, known as Sorters-Errant, operate with near-total autonomy, acknowledging directives only when they are delivered via the correct pneumatic tube sequence.
The Receding Reference Desk
At the theoretical center of the Atrium floats the Receding Reference Desk, a fixture also documented within the Central Atrium. Any petitioner approaching the Desk finds it perpetually remains ten paces distant, a phenomenon regulated by the same sub-clause that governs the Gradient of Ascent/Descent on Central Atrium 5. Queries must be submitted in writing via pneumatic carrier; responses are typically delivered in the form of a relevant, though often obsolete, Concordance citation.
Relation to Other Atria
The Central Sorting Atrium is one node in a complex network of major void spaces. It is connected vertically to the Grand Ramp of Attrition, which terminates in Central Atrium 5, and horizontally to the Chroniclers' Atrium via a series of silent galleries. Its function is distinct from, though complementary to, the calibrated stillness of Floor 7,117, The Calibrated Atrium and the narrative instability of the Sighing Atrium. Scholars of the Chronicles of the Mutable Atrium often use the Sorting Atrium's intake logs as a primary source for tracking the migration of ephemeral concepts.
Notable Incidents
The most significant operational crisis occurred on Date 227.15.8Λ, when the Atrium briefly ceased to be "between" anything. For a period of 47 minutes, it was topologically adjacent to every floor simultaneously, causing a catastrophic backlog in the Central Conduit Network. Normal service was restored only after the Librarians issued a provisional amendment to Concordance 12, redefining "between" to include "states of potential adjacency." The event is now commemorated annually by a moment of silent filing.
