Chroniclers' Atrium
MS 6238.31 · Places and structures
The Chroniclers' Atrium is the primary administrative and archival complex for the Guild of Chroniclers, located on Floor 11,892. It functions as both the guild's headquarters and the central repository for all authorized narrative accounts of Tower events, including official expedition logs, amended Concordance drafts, and Notarised Rumours. The Atrium is characterized by its perpetually low light levels—maintained to reduce ink-fade—and its distinctive acoustics, which amplify the sound of scribal tools but dampen human speech.
Architecture and Layout
The Atrium is a rectangular chamber measuring 200 by 150 paces, with a vaulted ceiling rising to 50 paces at its apex. Its walls are lined with tiered scribe-carrels, each equipped with a regulated lumen-basin and a pneumatic tube connection to the central filing hub. The floor is paved with absorptive bluestone to mitigate ink-spill hazards. A central aperture, offset from the true centre of the chamber by approximately seven paces, provides vertical access via a bank of manual-lift cranes. The architectural design is frequently cited in Concordance 3, Section 7.3 as the standard for "controlled-illumination scriptoria."
Primary Functions
The Atrium’s core duty is the authentication and preservation of the Tower’s temporal record. This involves several distinct processes:
- Log Certification: All expedition returns must submit their inventories and narrative summaries here for notarisation. A log is not considered official until it bears the Atrium’s sigil and a sequential Log Number.
- Concordance Amendment Tracking: Every proposed amendment to the Concordances generates a draft document, which is filed in the Atrium alongside records of its debate and disposition. The master register of superseded clauses is maintained in the Calibrated Atrium, but the authoritative chain of amendment is held here.
- Rumour Notarisation: Under Ordinance 45-B, any persistent rumour circulating for more than one Tower Year may be submitted for notarisation, transforming it from hearsay into a citable, if provisional, source.
The Perpetual Manuscript
The Atrium’s most famous—and contentious—holding is the Perpetual Manuscript, a single scroll upon which a collective account of the "current" Tower Year is continuously inscribed. As events occur or are formally reported, scribes add to the scroll, which is advanced on a mechanical spindle system. The manuscript is never completed; at the start of each new chromatic cycle in the Grand Atrium, the existing scroll is sealed and archived, and a new blank scroll is begun. Debate persists over whether the Manuscript constitutes a historical record or is itself a constituent event. The Guild of Theoretical Mechanics has filed several objections regarding its ontological status, all of which are held in the Reliquary Alcove for Unresolved Disputes.
Notable Features and Artefacts
- The Hourly Carillon
- A timekeeping device that strikes not on the hour, but at the moment the most recent scribe completes a line of text. Its irregular chimes are a constant feature of Atrium acoustics.
- The Ink-Sump
- A central reservoir fed by waste ink from all carrels. The composition of the sump is analysed weekly for trends in narrative sentiment, a practice known as "chromatic divination," though its predictive validity is disputed.
- The Warden's Lectern
- A standing desk fashioned from a single piece of petrified Yawning Wood, from which the Warden of the Chroniclers presides over authentication ceremonies. The lectern is inscribed with the opening clause of the now-superseded First Concordance.
Governance and Disputes
The Atrium is governed by the Warden of the Chroniclers, an office appointed for life by a council of Senior Scribes. Current operations are dictated by a patchwork of ordinances, primarily Concordance 3, but with significant operational guidance drawn from the lesser-known Concordance 11, which deals specifically with "Narratives of Ascent and Descent." A long-standing jurisdictional dispute exists with the archivists of the Central Atrium 5 regarding which body holds primacy over the cataloguing of expedition intentions versus their outcomes. This dispute is currently deferred to the Chamber of Deferred Judgement, where it has resided for 143 Tower Years.
Scholarly Contradictions
The archive’s records are not internally consistent. Most notably, Concordance 3 states the Chroniclers' Atrium was established on Floor 11,892 in the year of the Crimson Lumen, while an earlier draft of Concordance 11, held in the Atrium’s own annex, claims it originated on "a sub-floor adjacent to the Seventh Helical Gallery" before being relocated. The Atrium’s official position, as stated in its most recent annual summary, is to cite both sources without reconciliation, a practice known as "parallel verification."
