Carbon Dating Archival
MS 4188.75 · Practices and doctrines
Carbon Dating Archival (C.D.A.) is the specialized Tower practice of using the measured decay of residual processed carbon—specifically, that found in Petition Slips, Form C-1 cover sheets, and archival blotting paper—to determine the relative temporal ordering of non-sequentially numbered floors and contested administrative actions.
The discipline operates under the regulatory auspices of Concordance 891, which establishes the Archival Dating Tower (A.D.T.) as the sole sanctioned facility for the procedure. All materials subjected to Carbon Dating Archival must be logged via Form 88-C and their chain of custody meticulously documented using the standard Circulation Slip.
Principles and Method
Carbon Dating Archival is predicated on the principle of Archival Residual (AR), a measurable isotope concentration imparted during the paper-pulping and ink-fixing processes standardized by the Librarians in C.E. 42. The decay rate of AR follows a half-life of precisely 573 Carillion, a unit defined by the oscillation period of the Carillion in the Western Stacks.
The standard procedure (Annex Δ-12 of Concordance 891) requires a 10-mg sample, excised by a Senior Aperture Registrar using a silver-bladed stylus. The sample is combusted in a sealed chamber, and the resultant gases are analyzed via a calibrated pneumatic spectrograph. The AR ratio is then plotted against the Master Decay Curve, maintained in the Central Scriptorium, to yield a date expressed in Tower Reckoning (T.R.).
Applications and Jurisdiction
Carbon Dating Archival is primarily employed in three contexts:
- Floor Sequence Arbitration: When the numerical designation of a floor is disputed or missing, C.D.A. of the oldest extant Circulation Slip found on-site is used to establish its position in the relative vertical sequence. This was instrumental in resolving the Great Spiral Discrepancy of T.R. 12,104.
- Dating of Administrative Acts: The authenticity and sequence of contradictory ordinances, such as competing amendments to a Concordance, can be tested by dating the petition slips submitted for their promulgation.
- Authentication of Holdings: Materials suspected of being "floor-ghosts" or spontaneous archival generation can be validated against the paper-stock timeline.
All findings must be countersigned by an Aperture Registrar and filed with the Registrar's Office within 30 Stairwell Days.
The Axiomatic-Negative Schism
The predominant doctrinal dispute in C.D.A. concerns the constancy of the decay rate. The School of Negative Phenomena holds that AR decay is subject to "procedural dilation"—slowing in the vicinity of actively amended Concordances or during high-volume Archival Relocation periods. They cite carbon-dating of the substrate from the Archival Integration debates (C.E. 115–210) as evidence of such anomalies.
The rival Axiomatic School dismisses this as measurement error introduced by inconsistent blotting-paper batches, a variable they assert is controlled for by the Master Curve. The schism remains formally unresolved, though the Axiomatic view is currently favored for official Dating and demerit assessments by the Librarians.
Limitations and Caveats
Carbon Dating Archival cannot be applied to materials produced before the standardization of paper chemistry in C.E. 42, rendering the early Concordance Era "chronologically opaque." Furthermore, materials that have been treated for Archival Mite infestation, or which have undergone more than seven documented circulations, are considered contaminated and ineligible for certified dating.
The maximum reliable range is approximately 50,000 Carillion, after which the measurable AR residual falls below the threshold of the pneumatic spectrograph. Dates beyond this horizon are extrapolated using secondary methods, such as ink-corrosion scaling or clerk-signature succession analysis, and are marked as "provisional" on all official records.
Standard Forms and Reporting
The result of any Carbon Dating Archival procedure is recorded on a quadrupicate carbon set, Form CDA-7 ("Dating Certificate"). The original is filed with the A.D.T.; the duplicate is attached to the Provenance Slip of the sampled material; the triplicate is sent to the originating floor's registrar; and the quadruplicate is archived in the Chronological Vault on Floor Ξ-7.
Any challenge to a certified date must be submitted on a Petition Slip (made of the Concordance-specified carbon paper) and is itself subject to a new C.D.A. cycle, creating a potentially infinite regress that, per Ordinance 4 (Central Scriptorium's Standard Chronology), is truncated after the third iteration by a Librarian's fiat.
