Artisan Caste
MS 8410.28 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Artisan Caste comprises the hereditary practitioners of the physical arts necessary for the maintenance of the Tower’s material fabric and the execution of the Librarians’ designs. Distinguished from the administrative, custodial, and martial castes, its members are defined by manual skill, heritable specialization, and a complex system of internal honorifics. Codification of the caste’s status and responsibilities is primarily governed by the Third, Ninth, and Twelfth Concordances.
Origins and Heraldic Charter
The caste’s formal establishment dates to the Ascent of the First Archon, with its foundational charter granted under the Twelfth Concordance, Clause 14. The Charter recognized twenty-seven distinct heritable lineages, each corresponding to a core Tower vocation: Parchment-Menders, Glass-Blowers for endless lumen-tubes, Clock-Smiters for the inter-floor pendulums, Stone-Singers for wall repair, and Iron-Wrights for rail and stanchion work, among others. Unlike the Obsidian Guard Caste, eligibility is not traced to a seminal military event but to “demonstrated and sustained utility in the material perpetuity of the archive.” The Office of Heraldic Verification maintains the Caste Registry for the Artisan lines, a duty it shares with its oversight of the Obsidian Guard Caste.
Internal Hierarchy and Guild Structure
The Caste is subdivided into three primary strata: Master, Journeyman, and Apprentice. Attainment of Master status within a lineage requires not only peer-reviewed demonstration of skill but also the creation of a “Masterwork” judged to contribute to the Tower’s structural or aesthetic integrity. These strata are administered by the Artificers’ Guild, an internally elected body whose rulings on technique and material usage carry the weight of supplementary ordinance under the Ninth Concordance. A persistent scholarly disagreement exists regarding the status of the Custodial Scribe Caste, with some hermeneutists arguing it represents a specialized sub-lineage of the Artisan Caste (specifically related to the maintenance of writing implements and non-administrative scroll-work), while the dominant view, backed by the Librarians’ formal recognition, holds it as a distinct entity occupying a stratum between the Silent Porter and full Scribe castes.
Inter-Caste Relations and the Assumption of Merit
Relations with other castes are governed by strict protocols. Artisan Caste members are routinely contracted by the Stratocracy of the Silent Citadel for fortification work and by the various Scribe Guilds for the manufacture of their tools. Interaction with the Obsidian Guard Caste is particularly formalized, requiring written requisitions approved by a Citadel Archon. While the caste is endogamous, provisions for exceptional contribution exist. The mechanism of Assumption of Merit, detailed in Annex Delta of the Obsidian Decree, provides a pathway for a Master Artisan—upon unanimous vote of the caste council and approval of the reigning Archon—to be provisionally elevated, typically into a lower administrative scribal lineage. The process is initiated by Form D-7 (Petition for Provisional Caste Assumption) and is recorded as having been successfully invoked only eleven times in the recorded history of Floor 707.
Material Rights and Sacrosanct Workspaces
The Twelfth Concordance grants the Artisan Caste exclusive usufruct rights over designated material caches and recycling conduits found on industrial-floored sectors. Their workshops, known as “Forge-Floors” or “Atelier Floors,” are considered sacrosanct under the same Concordance, with unauthorized entry by non-caste members punishable by re-assignment to deep archival sorting duties. The most renowned of these is the Glassworks of Floor 19,304, which produces the distortion-free panels for the Tower’s few external viewports. The caste is also responsible for the maintenance of the non-ceremonial armaments of the Obsidian Guard, though the prohibition against tampering with esoteric fixtures like The Door That Is Not A Door remains under the sole enforcement purview of the Guard Caste itself.
Contemporary Role and Disputes
In modern Tower governance, the Artisan Caste’s political influence is indirect but material. While they hold no seats on the major concordant committees, the functionality of the archive is utterly dependent on their output. A current doctrinal dispute, referenced in the addenda to the Ninth Concordance, concerns whether digital archivists (a role created after the discovery of the Memory-Silk Fossils on Floor 44) constitute a new, twenty-eighth heritable lineage within the Artisan Caste, or if they represent an entirely new caste formation. The Librarians have yet to issue a definitive clarification, leaving the matter in a state of productive bureaucratic tension.
