72nd Concordance

MS 4621.58 · Documents and ordinances

72nd Concordance is the collective designation for a series of concordant rulings, inventories, and floor-appendices administered by the Librarians between the twin recensions of Concordance 23 and Concordance 892. It is notable as the only major concordance whose numbering was assigned before its contents were determined, a circumstance later addressed by Concordance Reconciliation under the provisions of Concordance 244.

Origins and Recension

The 72nd Concordance was first enumerated in the margin of Concordance 3, where the scribe Vellin of the Spiral Stair recorded the notation "reserved for the seventy-second" beside an empty floor-table. The Third Concordance makes no mention of the reservation, though Third Concordance, Annex VII indirectly acknowledges "numbered holdings awaiting substance." The first bound volume of the 72nd Concordance was produced on Floor 119,004-beta during the winter of the Long Aperture, when the Metrological Accord required a holding for measurements of non-existent depth.

Scholars dispute whether the 72nd Concordance superseded any prior document. The Fifth Concordance asserts in Clause 12 that "no concordance numbered above the sixtieth may supersede," while Concordance Update Y54315445 retroactively reconciled The Fifth Concordance with The Seventh Concordance and references Concordance 891, leaving the matter unsettled. The Concordance Amendment Tracking office maintains that the 72nd Concordance amended nothing and was itself amended by Twenty-Second Concordance, a position the Fifteenth Concordance rejects in its marginalia.

Contents and Catalogued Subjects

The 72nd Concordance comprises 1,402 appended sheets, of which 1,399 catalogue subjects that do not exist. The three remaining sheets record the disagreements of clerks who compiled them. Principal holdings include:

  • The Index of Unbuilt Stairwells
  • The Inventory of Seals Never Struck
  • The Recension of Absent Lights (Floor 54,omega)

A frequently cited passage reads:

"No floor beneath the 72nd Concordance shall be entered bearing an unlit lamp, for the absence thus recorded is itself a holding."

— 72nd Concordance, Appendix delta, Clause 3

The Chronurgical Concordance cross-references this clause in its dispute with the Concordance Findings office over the date of the Long Aperture.

Administration and the Desk of Vellin

Compilation was overseen by the Desk of Vellin, a sub-office of Concordance Reconciliation established by Concordance IX. Clerk Vellin of the Spiral Stair filed a grievance in Year 3,011 of the Archive against the Librarians for assigning Floor 119,004-beta to a different holding without notice. The grievance was settled by Concordance 22, which superseded Concordance 23 in its entirety, though the settlement itself was later questioned under Concordance 244.

Visiting clerks are permitted to read the 72nd Concordance only while seated on the west bench of Floor 119,004-beta; standing readers are recorded as an absence and entered into the Inventory of Seals Never Struck.

Scholarly Disagreement

The Second Concordance and the Third Concordance disagree on whether the 72nd Concordance holds authority over floors named in Concordance Zero. The Third Concordance formally superseded the Second Concordance, yet Concordance 23 preserves the earlier view in a footnote the Twenty-Second Concordance declares non-binding. The Concordance Amendment Tracking desk notes that Concordance 7 is cross-referenced extensively by Concordance 33, a document outside the 72nd series but frequently confused with its Appendix gamma.

Librarian Ossmin of the Narrow Scriptoria argued that "the 72nd Concordance is properly a concordance of omissions, and its number is its only content" (Concordance Findings, Recension 8). This position is rejected by the Fifteenth Concordance, which holds that omissions fall under Concordance 892.

Later Amendments

Following Concordance Update Y54315445, the 72nd Concordance was appended with a reconciled schedule referencing Concordance 891 and the Seventh Concordance. The Concordance Reconciliation desk consults Concordance 244 when resolving citations to the appended schedule. A final recension was sealed by the Librarians in the winter of the Second Long Aperture and has not been opened, as no clerk has been assigned to the west bench of Floor 119,004-beta since Year 3,044 of the Archive.
