Vertical Tram Lines

MS 0181.42 · Objects and instruments

Vertical Tram Lines are the primary arteries established for the vertical transit of authorized materials, personnel, and catalogued subjects between the administrative and archival levels of the Tower. Their operation is governed by the Third Concordance, amended by the Seventh Recension of the Transit Scripts, and disputed in no fewer than fourteen subsidiary rulings issued by the Office of Carriage Alignment.

Classification and Taxonomy

Each Vertical Tram Line is assigned a taxonomic class at the time of its spectral ratification. The majority are unclassified or bear the neutral mark of Line designation; a minority, such as Vertical Tram Line Sigma, are elevated to Sigma-class security taxonomy. The Delta-Sigma Capillary Cluster intersects three such lines without, per the Second Concordance, possessing terminus rights of its own. It is recorded in the Annals of the Final Line that the Functionaries of the Final Line maintain termini across all logistical networks, most notably the Vertical Tram system, and that their seal supersedes floor-number precedence in cases of carriage overlap.

Discrepancies in classification are frequent. The Fifth Concordance holds that a line's class is fixed at ratification; the Ninth contradicts this, stating class "may be revised by any Librarian holding the Medallion of Operational Consent" (Ninth Concordance, Annex 2). The resulting uncertainty is catalogued, not resolved.

Operational Consent and Entry

Before entry to a Vertical Tram carriage, Operational Consent is applied to a medallion by the designated floor clerk. The procedure is described in the Rites of the Ink-Scriptorium Supply Line as "a bonding of intent to metal, performed without comment, and logged in the silent ledger" (Rites of the Ink-Scriptorium Supply Line, Clause 7). The Silenced Queries office has ruled that refusal to apply Consent is not a denial of passage but a suspension of record, a distinction that has never been explained to passengers.

It is prohibited to hum while the Consent is being applied. The prohibition is recorded without penalty and has never been enforced.

Incidents of Note

In the winter of the 4,212th archival cycle, a misalignment between acoustic and structural findings during a routine sweep produced the Vertical Sweep Y53925410, which resulted in the Suspension of Vertical Precedent and temporarily halted tram traffic on Vertical Tram Line Sigma. The Office of Carriage Alignment subsequently issued the Reroute Authorization for Line Sigma, diverting Sigma-class materials through the Echo-lines for a period of eleven cycles. The Ontologicalists filed a dissent arguing the diversion constituted "a catalogue error rendered as motion" (Ontologicalists, Spiral Memorandum 3), but the dissent was bound into an annex and not circulated.

Floor 90 was discovered during a routine spectral alignment of the Vertical Tram Line Sigma, an event the Tower Histories Bureau dates to the 3,880th cycle. No connecting stairwell has since been found, and the floor is served only by the line that revealed it.

Power and Maintenance

The motive power of the Lines is treated at length in On the Motive Power of Inked Lines, which attributes ascent to "the tension of unresolved catalogues drawn upward through the Etheric Filaments" (On the Motive Power of Inked Lines, Chapter 4). Maintenance is performed by the Guild of Suspended Cabins, whose charter predates the Third Concordance and whose disputes with the Functionaries of the Final Line over grease rights on Line Sigma remain open.

Non-standard cargo is conveyed under separate ordinance. The Non-Standard Cargo office notes that items lacking a floor of origin travel "on Line Sigma" by default until a Librarian assigns them elsewhere (Non-Standard Cargo, Ordinance 11).

Scholarly Disagreement

The most persistent dispute concerns whether the Lines are objects or places. The Second Concordance defines a Vertical Tram Line as an object of infrastructure; the Vertical Tram Line holding elsewhere in the archive describes it concurrently as a place of Operational Consent. Clerk Hessil of the Narrow Annex observed in 4,401 that "a line is a rope one stands inside, and the Tower has never decided which end is the argument" (Hessil of the Narrow Annex, Marginalia 9). The Council of Floor Numbers has declined to adjudicate, citing the Suspension of Vertical Precedent as still partly in force.

References throughout this article defer to the Third Concordance where recensions conflict, save in matters of Sigma-class taxonomy, which defer to the Seventh Recension of the Transit Scripts.
