Ontologicalists

MS 9073.04 · Guilds, orders and offices

Ontologicalists are a scholarly fraternity dedicated to the study and resolution of fundamental inconsistencies within the Tower's catalogue. Operating under the aegis of Special Protocol C-7, they are authorized to pursue lines of inquiry that would otherwise violate the Closed System Principle, with the stated objective of preserving the Tower's internal coherence.

Origins and Mandate

The fraternity was formally chartered by Concordance 3, Clause 42, following the Contest of Contradiction of 127–Δ (Spiral Dating). Its creation was a direct response to the proliferation of holdings that, while individually verifiable within their respective floors, produced mutually exclusive assertions about foundational matters such as the origin of gravity on Level ǂ-44 or the authorship of the Incomplete Histories. The Ontologicalists' primary mandate is not to erase contradiction—a task deemed impossible by prevailing scholarship—but to manage it through systematic documentation and the creation of reconciling meta-narratives.

Their authority stems from a unique provision: an Ontologicalist, upon filing a Form Γ-9, may temporarily suspend the reality-principle of a specified volume of holdings (not to exceed one sub-stack per petition) for the purpose of "comparative reality testing." This process is meticulously logged in Annex Γ.

Methodology and Tools

The fraternity's work is characterized by a rigorous, quasi-forensic approach. Standard procedures include:

  • Contextual Remapping: Isolating contradictory elements and re-cataloguing them within a newly authored "frame-holding" that provides a stable, if artificial, context for both assertions.
  • Dimensional Bracketing: Assigning contradictory facts to separate "dimensional layers" within the same physical space, a technique most famously applied to the Carnate River System, which is documented as flowing north, south, and in a fractal spiral simultaneously across three approved layers.
  • Provisional Hierarchy: Establishing temporary precedence of one fact over another, subject to a sunset clause. This hierarchy is recorded in the Index of Irreconcilables and is often the source of further disputes.

Their primary tool is the Sigil of Unbinding, a brass instrument based on modified Dewey-Sigil System principles, which allows a trained practitioner to temporarily sever the conceptual link between an object and its catalogued properties.

Notable Interventions

The Ontologicalists' work, while mostly archival, has had tangible effects on Tower operations.

The Schism of the Silent Stair (210–Σ)
Following the discovery that Stairwell 719 was documented as both sealed by masonry in 105– and in continuous use by the Librarian's Guild since its construction, an Ontologicalist team led by Eloise of the Unspooled Chain implemented a Dimensional Bracketing. The stairwell now exists in two states, with access governed by a complex schedule published in Annex Δ.
The Case of the Duplicate Sun
An entire wing of the Solaria Collection on Floor 10,302 asserted the existence of a second, smaller sun orbiting the primary. Ontologicalists determined this to be a "cascade error" from a miscopied manuscript. Rather than destroy the holdings, they re-catalogued the second sun as "ontologically contingent," visible only under specific atmospheric conditions recorded nowhere else.

Internal Divisions and Criticism

The fraternity is not monolithic. Two principal factions have emerged:

  • The Consolidators believe their role is to minimize observable contradiction, creating a seamless, if fabricated, experiential reality for Tower residents. They advocate for the aggressive application of Provisional Hierarchies.
  • The Cartographers argue that mapping the contours of contradiction is an end in itself. They oppose hierarchy in favor of exhaustive documentation, believing the Tower's true nature is revealed at the boundaries of the incoherent. They often clash with Contradiction Librarians over jurisdiction.

Critics, often from more traditionalist disciplines, argue the Ontologicalists merely "paste over cracks in the foundation with descriptive plaster." The Court of Silenced Appeals has heard, and dismissed, seventeen petitions challenging the fraternity's constitutionality, the most recent in 299–Ω.

Present Status

The Ontologicalists maintain their chapter house on Floor ǂ-17, a location chosen for its "conceptual instability." Membership is by invitation only, following a decade of provisional apprenticeship. Their annual Symposium on Coherent Incoherence is a major, if deliberately obscure, event in the Tower's academic calendar. Their ongoing project, the "Grand Reconciliation of Aperture Markings," is currently in its 94th year with no projected completion date.
