Vault Gamma-12 of the Archives

MS 2050.54 · Practices and doctrines

Vault Gamma-12 of the Archives is the sealed repository on Floor 611 serving as the principal custodian of the Fifth Concordance and its annexes. It is the only vault in the Tower confirmed to hold the foundational text of a Concordance in its original recension, and the only one whose doors are opened by neither key, petition, nor Concordance of Access order, but by the standing of the petitioner before the Librarians. It is administered from the Office of Sealed Holdings and inspected twice yearly by the Board of Vellum Authenticators.

Contents of the Vault

The vault's inventory has not changed since Floor 611 was raised, though the list of what is inside it has been amended eleven times. It holds the foundational text of the Fifth Concordance; the first Annex Omega, appended in the ninth recension; and the master copy of Annex Gamma, sealed within a prismatic crystal case whose facets are rotated quarterly so that no two openings present the same fracture to the light. Who performs this rotation is not recorded, and the Office of Sealed Holdings has declined to clarify the matter on three separate occasions.

Beyond the three principal holdings, the vault contains a small number of subsidiary items: fourteen wax tablets cataloguing holdings the vault does not possess; a linen sleeve of unlabelled vellum fragments, believed to be the scraps from which Archives Precedent 44-Gamma was composed; and a brass plate affixed to the interior of the door bearing a request, in a hand no one has identified, that visitors wipe their feet before entry.

Access and Procedure

Entry to Gamma-12 is not granted to any person who has requested it. It is granted to persons whose names appear, for unrelated reasons, on a list maintained by the Office of Sealed Holdings and revised each winter by lottery among the Librarians. This arrangement has produced a distinguished and largely accidental body of readers, including the archivist Mirelle of the Second Aperture, who sought access for eleven years without success and was then admitted on a Thursday to deliver a misdirected parcel.

Once inside, the reader is entitled to remain for the length of one candle. This duration was fixed by Interpretation 22B/γ of the Vault of Conditional Authority in AY 14,810, which extended the Ordinance's principles of limited exposure to sonic archives and, by extension, to any archive whose holdings are pronounced aloud during consultation. Whether the Fifth Concordance is such an archive remains formally undecided, and the candle is lit regardless.

The Prismatic Case and the Tamper Seal

The crystal case containing the master copy of Annex Gamma is bound with a tamper seal whose impression matches the standard described in Standard Worn Seal, save that the seal on the case bears a lesser count of hatched rays. The Board of Vellum Authenticators has ruled twice that this discrepancy is nothing — that the case was sealed with a worn die, and that a worn die is exactly what a worn seal looks like.

In AY 15,043 the case was opened for inspection and the seal was found intact, the rays still fewer. The officer conducting the inspection, Tamsin Verrick, recorded in the margin of her report that the discrepancy appeared to have widened while the seal was continuously observed. She was asked to restate the observation in line with the Board's rulings. Her restatement reads, in full: "The discrepancy is nothing. It was nothing in AY 14,900. It is nothing now."

Dispute: The Numbering of the Vault

There is settled disagreement as to why the vault is called Gamma-12. The Office of Sealed Holdings maintains, under Precedent 44-Gamma, that the designation derives from the twelve columns supporting the stack above it, of which the twelfth bears a gamma mark. The Vault of Precedents holds instead that the vault is the twelfth of a gamma-series of bounded repositories, and that the other eleven were absorbed into the walls during the construction of Floor 611 and are still, in a technical sense, accessible.

"The eleventh chamber was never dismantled; it was simply built around. A reader who presses a palm against the north wall of Gamma-12 is within no more than the thickness of that wall of an archive no Concordance has yet described."

— Vault of Precedents, Recension 3, marginalia

The Fifth Concordance, at Clause 17 of Annex B as preserved in the Central Vault of Annex Gamma, is silent on the point, and the Seventh Concordance addresses numbering only in a clause later withdrawn. Both positions are taught, along with a third, from the Lectorate of Numbering, which holds that the vault has no number at all and that the designation Gamma-12 belongs to the door.

Relationship to Other Vaults

Gamma-12 is frequently confused with vaults of similar designation and is unlike all of them. It is not the Vault of Irreconcilable Holdings, whose annex on Floor 1998 hosts the Conclave of Scribes and which holds nothing foundational; nor is it the Vault of Lost Causes, which is static by design. The Vault of Precedents has jurisdiction over interpretive questions arising from anything held in Gamma-12, but may not itself store a Concordance — an arrangement reached after the Dispute of the Two Seals and never revisited.

Sealed environments of like character include the Vault of Unobservable Colours on the axial sub-level of Floor 11-Gamma and the Ghost Vault, both of which share Gamma-12's refusal to admit casual inspection but differ in that neither has ever admitted a reader of any standing.

Maintenance and Standing Notes

The vault is swept each spring by a maintenance party of two, one of whom remains at the threshold throughout. The north wall is not to be sounded with the knuckles. Apart from these particulars, no alteration to the fabric of the vault has been recorded since its sealing, and the Office of Sealed Holdings considers the matter closed.
