Ghost Vault

MS 5508.41 · Practices and doctrines

The Ghost Vault is a designated sub-vault of the Vault of Unfinished Business, established under the authority of the Seventh Concordance, Annex omega, Clause 7, and charged with the custody of catalogued holdings that exhibit para-cognitive activity. Its jurisdiction is exercised by the Office of Spectral Logistics. The Ghost Vault occupies no fixed position in the Tower's floor-numbering scheme and has been recorded at four separate apertures over the course of its administrative history.

Establishment

The Ghost Vault was constituted in the aftermath of the Correctivist audit CY 9,411, itself commissioned in response to the Greywater Incident in Spire 208. The audit's findings, transmitted to the Librarians under seal, identified a category of holdings that could not be safely catalogued in ordinary stacks: objects, chronicles, and working papers which appeared to record events that had not yet occurred, or which altered their own descriptive metadata upon being read. The audit's operative paragraph is reproduced below.

"It is the finding of this Correctivist audit that certain holdings are not inert, and that their cataloguing has itself become an event in the sequence the catalogue purports to describe. Pending resolution, such holdings shall be withdrawn from general circulation and placed in a designated sub-vault under separate seal."

— Correctivist audit CY 9,411, operative clause 3

The Seventh Concordance ratified the proposal, authorising the Ghost Vault under Annex omega, Clause 7. The Clause's wording is characteristically terse and has been the subject of sustained interpretive dispute; see §Disputes below.

Contents and custody

The Ghost Vault holds a small but unusually well-documented collection. Its principal holdings include:
  • The working notes and marginalia of Selena Moss, Archivist-Luminary, author of On Ghost Protocols. These papers are the archive's most-cited example of self-referential causality loops, having twice been observed to anticipate the indexing decisions made about them.
  • The chronicles of the Ghost Lights, withdrawn from general circulation following their assessment as a "compromised" holding.
  • A complete run of the Ghost Ledger, transferred from the Office of Spectral Logistics under protest.
  • Sundry specimens of degraded Ghost-Flax, retained as reference material for the ongoing study of Procedural Leakage.
Access to the Ghost Vault is governed by a standing rule of the Office of Spectral Logistics. Visitors are asked not to state aloud the shelfmark of any object they intend to consult until they are standing in front of it.

Architecture

The Ghost Vault has been recorded at four apertures since its establishment: Spire 208, Sublevel 14, a landing within the Vault of Unfinished Business proper, and — for a period of approximately nine years — a doorway in the West Stairwell that the Office of Spectral Logistics has never satisfactorily explained. The most recent relocation was authorised under the Eighth Concordance and is generally understood to have been a correction rather than a move; the fourth aperture had begun to appear in visitors' descriptions of rooms they had not yet entered. The Vault's interior arrangement follows the standard sub-vault plan, with the exception of a central reading alcove furnished at the request of Selena Moss. The alcove contains a single chair, a desk, and a lamp that is not catalogued.

Disputes

The interpretation of Annex omega, Clause 7 has divided the Librarians since the Seventh Concordance was promulgated. One reading, associated with the Office of Spectral Logistics, holds that "para-cognitive activity" refers strictly to holdings that demonstrate awareness of being catalogued. A rival reading, associated with the compilers of the Ghost Ledger and later with the school of Literary Ghost Theory, holds that the clause encompasses any holding whose description cannot be brought into stable agreement with its contents. Under the latter reading, a substantial portion of the general stacks would qualify for withdrawal — a consequence its proponents have never satisfactorily addressed. The dispute was formally tabled at the CY 9,423 sitting of the Concordance and remains open. A third position, attributed to the author of The Ghost in the Ledger: A Treatise on Absentee Functionaries, holds that the distinction is immaterial and that the Ghost Vault should be understood as a description of the Tower's relationship to its own holdings rather than as a room. This position has been noted, filed, and not pursued.

Related holdings

The Ghost Vault is catalogued under the general heading the Vault and is administratively subordinate to the Vault of Unfinished Business. It is distinct from the Vault of Immutables, with which it shares no holdings, no staff, and — following an incident at the CY 9,418 inventory — no corridor.
