Validation of Provisional Doors
MS 2797.96 · Practices and doctrines
The Validation of Provisional Doors refers to the administrative and ontological protocol mandated by The Concordance of Open Doors for ratifying the formal status of an aperture designated as provisional. It is the process by which a door is confirmed to possess the necessary "adhesiveness to reality" (Concordance of Open Doors, Clause 4.7) to be considered a stable, if conditional, architectural feature of The Tower.
Legal Basis and Purview
Validation authority is divided between two primary bodies. The Bureau of Ingress Validation, a sub-committee of the Librarians, is responsible for the initial technical review and issuance of a Provisional Validation Certificate (PVC). Concurrently, the Clerks of the Aperture provide procedural oversight and ensure compliance with the Principle of Recursive Validation. The entire process is governed by the Concordance of Open Doors (Clauses 4-22) and further referenced in Concordance 31 (Annex Ω, "On Conditional Structures").
The Validation Pathway
The validation pathway is a six-stage process, each stage producing documentation that becomes part of the door's permanent record within the Collection of Unallocated Doors.
- Pre-Validation Survey: A Clerk-Provisional, such as Aris Thorn, documents the aperture's physical parameters, including its Polian Gauge reading, dimensional fluctuation index, and any audible hums or persistent drafts. This establishes the "Baseline Coherence."
- Ontological Anchoring: The proposed door must be linked, however tenuously, to at least one previously validated holding or concept within the Tower's archives. This is often the most contentious phase, requiring citation of precedent, such as IAP-Ω-7.
- Pre-Validation Hearing:]] A panel from the Bureau of Ingress Validation reviews the survey and anchoring proposal. A majority vote grants permission to proceed to instrumental testing.
- Instrumental Verification: Technicians employ devices like the Spengler Resonator to measure the door's "intent-to-open" gradient. The door must demonstrate a consistent, non-zero reading without materializing any actual handle or keyhole during the test period (standardized as 72 hours).
- Recursive Validation Certification:]] The Clerks of the Aperture confirm that the validation process itself does not rely on any logical fallacies or unvalidated assumptions, creating a closed Validation Chain.
- PVC Issuance and Cataloguing: Following successful completion, the Bureau issues the PVC, and the door is assigned a formal designation (e.g., Ψ-412-4.7-AT) and entered into the ledger of the Collection of Unallocated Doors.
Disputes and Conditional Validations
A significant minority of validations are granted conditionally, a status codified in Clause 17 of the Concordance of Open Doors. Conditions may include temporal restrictions (e.g., "valid only during the silent hour"), user restrictions ("accessible solely to archivists of Grade VII or higher"), or dependency on the continued existence of another provisional structure. The case of Provisional Holding 17-θ, overseen by Archivist-Provisional Aris, established the precedent that a condition cannot reference an event outside the Tower's documented reality, such as "until the sun rises," as this constitutes a validation paradox.
Scholarly disagreement centers on the interpretation of Clause 11.3, which states a door must "provide conditional access to a space." The Formalist School, led by the analysts of Floor 4,102, argues this necessitates a demonstrable, if inaccessible, space-beyond. The Processualists, based in the Bureau of Registry, contend that the act of validation itself creates the conditional space, rendering prior demonstration unnecessary. This debate has stalled the validation of several thousand documented apertures.
Consequences of Lapsed Validation
A validated provisional door whose conditions are not met or whose Polian Gauge readings fall below the mandated threshold for 30 consecutive days enters a state of "Lapsed Coherence." It is not officially de-validated but is moved to a dormant sub-index. Lapsed doors are known to generate Documentary Phantoms—ephemeral records of their own previous states—which can clutter adjacent cataloguing systems. Remarkably, a door can be re-validated from a lapsed state without repeating the full pathway, provided its Documentary Phantom is substantial enough to serve as the new Baseline Coherence report.
