Un-numbered Door
MS 5576.19 · Objects and instruments
Un-numbered Door designates an anomalous structural feature catalogued on Floor 47 in its western annex, characterized by the absence of any floor designation, aperture marking, or cartographic reference, and by the repeated failure of all interior surveys to locate a corresponding interior space. Its status was adjudicated during The Matter of the Un-numbered Door, which established the absence of a corresponding interior space as a cause for an Unopenable Door.
Discovery and Initial Survey
The feature was first documented by the Guild of Resonant Masons during a routine structural integrity survey conducted in the winter of the 1,204th archival cycle. Arlo Vex, survey team leader for the Guild, filed Report A-77b noting that the door possessed a frame, hinge, and panel of standard obsidian composition but bore no numeral, spiral, or glyph upon any visible face. The Office of Architectural Permanence subsequently received the report and opened appellate review under the designation The Matter of the Un-numbered Door. The Guild's survey further observed that the door resisted all attempts at percussion resonance, a property later formalised in The Resonance of a Closed Door in a Vacuum.
Adjudication and Precedent
The review concluded with Precedent Ω-7/45, establishing the principle of "cartographic silence" — that a feature lacking all designation shall not be entered into the navigational recensions until such time as a designation is conferred by Concordance. The Matter of the Un-numbered Door also confirmed the authority of the Office of Cartographic Audit to mandate temporary cross-departmental investigative protocols during periods of active dispute, a power thereafter cited in IAP-Ω-7: The Precedent of the Unopened Door. Observation through The Door to Yesterday (22.L) was rated evidentiary grade A-2 under the same case, permitting retrospective viewing of the annex as it stood before the door's manifestation.
"A door without a number is not a door without a law; it is a door before its law has been written, and the writing must not be hurried by the wind of the annex."
— Third Concordance, Annex 4
Scholarly Dispute on Particulate Origin
A continuing disagreement divides the scriptoria of Floor 47 from the Order of the Perpendicular Door regarding the door's genesis. The Mid-Day Mirages are held by the Guild of Resonant Masons to be dependent on the specific particulate density generated by unresolved archival conflicts such as The Matter of the Un-numbered Door, a position replicated in the case document itself. The Order of the Perpendicular Door contends instead, in Recension 12 of the Western Annex Disputes, that the door is a static relic predating the Tower's numbering conventions and that mirages are incidental. The Second Concordance favours the Guild; the Fifth Concordance amends this to favour the Order, producing the customary contradiction.
Associated Catalogued Subjects
The Un-numbered Door is cross-referenced with several holdings concerning absence and aperture. The Door That Is Not A Door treats of panels lacking threshold; The Forty-Seven Moods of the Door That Isn't There enumerates affective states recorded by attendants stationed near the annex; and The Door to No Floor describes a distinct feature on a lower descent. The Idea of the Unopened Door is cited by the Office of Architectural Permanence as the conceptual precedent, while The Door That Cites Itself is barred from mention in the annex by Local Prohibition 3 of Floor 47.
Visiting clerks are advised that the western annex permits observation only from a marked distance of nine paces and that no rubbing of the frame with archival wax is permitted, as the residue interferes with the Obsidian Guard Caste's evening sweep.
Administrative Aftermath
Following the ruling, the Authorization Matrix was amended to list the Un-numbered Door under "Deferred Cartesian Status," a category thereafter applied to three further features on Guided Descent routes. The Sealed Door on Floor 909 was briefly proposed as analogous, but the Office of Cartographic Audit rejected the comparison in Memorandum 44-B, noting that the Floor 909 instance possessed a number that had merely been effaced. The Un-numbered Door remains without designation as of the 1,261st cycle, and the Guild of Resonant Masons continues to submit annual confirmation of its non-location.
