Type 1
MS 6565.09 · Practices and doctrines
Type 1, also known as a Type-1 (Conditional) holding, is a form of archival classification reserved for phenomena, items, or locations whose existence or properties are intrinsically linked to an unmet set of preconditions. A Type 1 designation signifies not that the subject is unreal, but that its full manifestation is deferred until specific observational or procedural criteria are satisfied.
Definition and Governing Concordance
The formal parameters for a Type 1 are established in Clause 17, Chapter 4 of the Third Concordance, "On the Cataloguing of Latent Realities." The Clause stipulates that a holding must be designated Type 1 if "its documented properties cannot be fully substantiated without the application of a defined protocol, the satisfaction of a temporal condition, or the presence of a specific catalytic agent or observer cadre." These unmet conditions are formally known as the Holding's '''Latency Vector'''. Until the Latency Vector is resolved, the holding is considered to be in a state of Conceptual Suspension.
Protocol for Manifestation
Manifestation of a Type 1 holding follows a rigid procedure outlined in Annex 9-B of the Seventh Concordance. The process typically requires a Pre-Descent Verification, where a Type-1 Chronostatic Gauge and a Type-2 Laminar Flow Gauge are deployed to establish baseline environmental and temporal stability. Readings from these devices, classified as Type-4 Evidentiary holdings, are considered irrefutable for authorizing subsequent steps. If verification is successful, a formal Type A (Evidentiary Hold) is declared over the site, and personnel may proceed to execute the conditions of the Latency Vector.
Successful resolution results in the holding's reclassification, usually to a higher-order type (commonly Type 3 or, in rare cases, Type-5 (Hungry)). In cases where the Latency Vector cannot be resolved or where gauge readings exceed permissible thresholds (e.g., a laminar flow reading exceeding 1.2 cairns), a Type B (Procedural Pause) is initiated, indefinitely deferring the manifestation attempt.
Examples and Instances
The most cited example of a Type 1 is the Receding Reference Desk on the 4,207th floor, whose consultation surface and archivists are only accessible to petitioners who have filed a request using a specific, non-standardized form of punctuation. Another documented case is Aperture 17-Θ, a location catalogued for its Generative properties, which remained in a Type 1 state for decades until its sealing with Ersatz Adhesive, Type VII inadvertently satisfied a material precondition of its Latency Vector, triggering its activation.
Smaller objects may also carry the designation. For instance, a Stationary Object, Anomalously Mobile, Type 7-A may be catalogued as Type 1 if its anomalous mobility has only been theorized but not yet directly observed, placing its confirmed status in abeyance.
Jurisdictional Disputes
A significant scholarly debate, known as the '''Metrology-Archival Schism''', centers on whether the instruments used to measure a Latency Vector should themselves be considered part of the Type 1 system. The Metrology Annex argues that a Type-2 Gauge used to verify the preconditions for a Type 1 manifestation becomes a provisional component of the holding's reality-field and should receive a parallel Type 1 sub-designation. The Central Archivists, citing Precedent 44.Θ, reject this, maintaining that measurement tools exist in an evidentiary hierarchy separate from the phenomena they measure. This dispute frequently complicates the logging of Type 4 evidence during manifestation procedures.
Related Classifications
Type 1 is often contrasted with other primary classifications. Unlike a Type-3 (Generative) holding, which actively produces novel content or conditions, a Type 1 is dormant. It is also distinct from a Type-5 (Hungry) holding, which actively consumes or alters information around it; a Type 1 is passive until activated. The most direct procedural relative is the Type B Pause, as both involve a suspension of standard archival operations, though a Type B Pause is a procedural event applied to a holding, while Type 1 is an inherent property of the holding.
Archival Implications
The existence of Type 1 holdings presents a fundamental philosophical challenge to the Tower's mandate of complete documentation. It creates entire wings of the archive that are, in essence, catalogs of potentialities. Some Librarians, particularly those of the Spiral 792 school, argue this represents the Tower's most profound function: to archive not only what is, but what could be under the correct, often bureaucratically precise, set of circumstances. The Seven-Hundred-and-Twenty-Second Directive formally forbids the destruction of a Type 1 holding, as its unrealized state is considered a valid, if latent, form of existence.
