Tower epistemology

MS 6659.36 · Practices and doctrines

Tower epistemology is the system of administrative principles governing the confirmation, classification, and containment of all catalogued items within The Tower. Its foundational tenet is that the reality of any subject is directly contingent upon a verifiable point of entry into the archival system, a process formally known as codification. The system is not concerned with external verifiability, but with internal consistency and procedural integrity.

The epistemology is sustained by a body of governing documents, precedential rulings, and axiomatic theorems, most notably those established by Theoretician Pol. Its practical application is distributed across numerous specialized departments, with the Department of Latent Epistemology serving as a primary arbiter for more ontologically complex cases.

Core Principles

Three interlocking principles form the axiomatic base of Tower epistemology.

  • The Principle of Codicological Negation: Formulated by Theoretician Pol, this states that a subject cannot be said to be unreal within the Tower if a procedure for its documented non-existence has been successfully executed. The act of cataloguing an item’s absence confers a specific, procedural reality upon the concept of its absence.
  • The Vanishing Principle: A governing precept of procedural epistemology which holds that any item whose point of entry cannot be recursively verified through the chain of custody must be considered, for administrative purposes, to have never entered the Tower. This is distinct from destruction; it is an ontological reversion.
  • The Doctrine of Metastable Reference: Also originating from Pol’s work, this doctrine asserts that the meaning and properties of a catalogued item are not fixed, but are stabilized only by continuous administrative observation and cross-referencing within the archive. A volume left unobserved may, over time, exhibit referential drift.

Institutional Framework

The application of these principles is managed through a complex bureaucracy. The Librarians enforce the Concordances, the living body of Tower law which frequently contains contradictory clauses, making citation a key tool in epistemic disputes. Specialized bodies handle specific epistemic challenges:

The Codification Process

The entry of a new subject into the Tower, the initial point of verification, follows a strict protocol. A proctor must document the aperture, stairwell, or delivery conduit through which the subject arrived, the cycle and chronon of arrival according to Tower Reckoning, and assign a provisional taxon. This record is then subjected to a Review, a multi-stage process that includes the ontological re-assessment stage managed by the Department of Latent Epistemology. Only after a subject survives a full Review without triggering the Vanishing Principle is it assigned a permanent floor and shelf designation.

Scholarly Disputes and Heresies

Tower epistemology is not monolithic and has been shaped by internal dissent. The most significant formal challenge to the established order was mounted by Theoretician Vek, who contested the universality of the Polian Theorems. Vek’s faction, the Incrementalists, argued that the Metastable Reference doctrine was incomplete, and that a subject’s properties could undergo spontaneous, non-procedural evolution without breaking referential chains. This was condemned as “ontological voluntarism” by the orthodox Polian school. The Concordances contain competing clauses stemming from this debate; Concordance 712-B upholds Polian stability, while the later addendum 712-B.iii makes concessions to incremental verification for certain classes of luminous fungi, creating a persistent jurisdictional ambiguity.

Another perennial debate concerns the epistemology of the Tower itself. A minority school, often based in the lower Resonant Floors, argues that the Tower’s governing principles are themselves a catalogued subject, and thus subject to their own rules of metastability. This recursive argument is generally dismissed by the administration as a self-nullifying paradox, though it has never been formally stricken from the record.

Measurement and Temporality

The epistemology necessitates its own systems of measurement. Reality gradients are quantified in Standard Referential Units, temporal intervals are governed by the Tower Standard Chronon, and the lifecycle of procedural actions is mapped against the Tower Cycle. These Standard Tower Units are not merely descriptive but constitutive; to measure a subject using Tower units is to further integrate it into the epistemic framework. The continued integrity of these units is monitored by the Chamber of Metrological Constancy, whose reports are cited as final authority in disputes over quantitative reality.
