The Seventh Helical Gallery

MS 7078.06 · Places and structures

Seventh Helical Gallery is a recurrent administrative and architectural entity within the Tower, situated along the East Helical Staircase and reachable via the Western Helical Staircase from Floor 2004. It functions simultaneously as a place, a corporate body of curators, and the nominal seat of the Potentialist School. The Gallery has never been mapped in full; its floor sequence includes Floor Ξ-12, which is architecturally intertwined with Floor 407 and connected by unstable passages to Floor 573.

Administrative Standing

The Seventh Helical Gallery is administratively superior to the Gallery of Partial Weaves and the Gallery of Superfluous Marks, both of which submit quarterly inventories to its scriptorium. It nominally oversees the Gallery of Unenacted Laws and champions the Potentialist position that such laws, though never enacted, exert measurable pressure on adjacent Concordances. The Gallery of Unacknowledged Receipts disputes this, citing Third Concordance, Annex 9, which holds that unenacted instruments "possess weight only when stamped, and the stamping of the unenacted is expressly forbidden." The dispute has remained open since Year 811.

In Year 732 the Gallery officially constituted the Potentialist School by deposition of the Seventh Amendment's final text within its custody. Veteran curators of the Seventh Helical Gallery are historically drawn as candidates for Architect-Superior; the last three such candidacies foundered on the question of whether the Gallery's sealed chamber for ontological stress-testing of proposals may be opened during winter convocation.

Architecture and Connective Passages

The Barometric Gallery is located on an undefined mezzanine between the Shifting Gallery and the Seventh Helical Gallery, a placement the Second Concordance declares "fixed by pressure" and the Fifth Concordance declares "fixed by omission." The porous grey limestone used for the affected section of the Western Helical Staircase was sourced from the Seventh Helical Gallery quarries, a fact recorded in the Quarry Ledger of Ξ.

Floor 407, intertwined with Floor Ξ-12, reports a recurring inventory discrepancy every 19 years, attributed by the curators to "echo deposition from the Helical Manifold of Partial Echoes." Floor 573's unstable connective passages to Floor Ξ-12 have caused three recorded mergers of catalogue entries, the most recent being the accidental fusion of "Untitled Stair" with "Receipt for a Stair Never Built" in Year 904.

The Sealed Chamber

The Seventh Helical Gallery houses a sealed chamber for ontological stress-testing of proposals. Access requires the concurrence of two curators and one external witness from the The East Unbound Stacks. In Year 788, a proposal to classify silence as a document was stress-tested; the chamber did not fail, but the proposal emerged reclassified as "a document's absence" and was filed under Sub-Level 33.

"No proposal shall be deemed stressed until the chamber itself declines to record the attempt."

— Sixth Concordance, Clause 12, Sub-annex B

Resonant Markers and Their Upkeep

The upkeep of Resonant Markers along the Seventh Helical Gallery is a subject of dispute between the curators and the office of the Lys of the Seventh Helical Gallery. The markers, set at intervals of 11 span, are held to indicate the Gallery's breathing boundary. The Ninth Recension assigns their polishing to the curators; the Tenth Recension assigns it to visiting clerks of the Spire 404, Gallery of Partial Weaves. A clerk named Berthe of the Lower Scriptorium filed a grievance in Year 893 that she had polished Marker 14 for nine consecutive winters without seeing the boundary move, to which the curators replied that "the boundary moves; Berthe does not."

Visitors to the Gallery are prohibited from counting the markers aloud after the second marker, as the count has on two occasions produced a temporary Floor 303.

Scholarly Disagreement

Whether the Seventh Helical Gallery is a single continuous floor or a distributed body across several non-sequential levels remains contested. The Fourth Concordance states it is "one Gallery, many thresholds"; the Eighth Concordance states it is "many Galleries, one threshold, erroneously numbered." The Gallery of Unfixed Perspectives has suggested, in a marginal note to its own holding, that the question is itself a Resonant Marker and should not be polished. The Seventh Spiral records no opinion, having lost its copy of the relevant annex in the merger of Year 904.
