The Compendium of Hypothetical Anomalies

MS 1552.40 · Documents and ordinances

The Compendium of Hypothetical Anomalies is a curated archival series dedicated to cataloging permutations of events, objects, and states deemed incoherent or categorically impossible by the Infinite Registry. It occupies a dedicated sequence of index carrels on Sub-level 12 of the Jurisprudence Stacks, adjacent to the Bureau of Hypothetical Durability. Its primary function is to serve as a negative reference for the evaluation of Hypothetical Durability Assessments and the calibration of lower thresholds for the Persistence Ladder.

Scope and Classification

The Compendium’s mandate, as defined by Annex Gamma of the Third Concordance, is to "record all permutations which, by virtue of internal contradiction or violation of sustained causal architecture, cannot obtain coherence." Entries are classified under a tripartite system:

A notable example is the entry for 'The Unseen Portrait', which occupies seven folios in the Class shelves and is frequently cited as a canonical example of Inverse Cataloging.

Administrative Role and Consultation

The Compendium is not a static document but an active bureaucratic instrument. The Bureau of Hypothetical Durability consults it routinely when assessing borderline cases for Form HDP-7. According to Procedural Memorandum 45.7, any entity whose hypothetical load approaches the thresholds outlined in The Principle of Hypothetical Load must be checked against the Compendium for analogous impossible structures. A match results in an automatic designation of "hypothetically non-durable," precluding further archival consideration.

This consultative role extends to other departments. The Office of Hypothetical Geography uses Class entries to map impossible geographies, while the Guild of Formal Cartographers references Class Γ items when drafting the Master Ledger of Permitted Mechanisms.

Notable Annotations and Dissents

The marginalia within the Compendium are themselves a subject of study. A famous annotation by Wren of the Silent Stacks on the flyleaf of Volume IX contains the first written formulation of the Inverse Plenitude Conjecture, which posits that the cataloging of an impossibility affirms the structural necessity of its impossibility. This annotation was later entered into the Compendium of Unheeded Dissents as Dissent 899.

Scholarly disagreement often centers on classification. The debate regarding the "Solenoid of Perpetual Stillness" – whether it belongs in Class for its contradictory motion state or Class Γ for its resistance to Registry coding – filled three addenda to the Index of Ambiguous Precedents and was only provisionally settled by citing the non-absolute standard INS-12.4.

Physical Composition and Access

The Compendium is maintained on standardized archival folios, bound in grey, non-reflective vellum. Each entry is stamped with the original impression of the Infinite Stamp, filed here as a negative reference. Access is governed by Concordance 22, Clause 8, which restricts handling to Archivists of the Fourth Rank or higher, or to personnel bearing a duly notarized Form HDP-7 consultation request. The reading carrels are equipped with non-hypothetical luminescence to prevent accidental conceptual bleed.

Related Holdings

The Compendium forms part of a broader ecosystem of anomaly documentation. It is frequently cross-referenced with the Compendium of Spectral Liabilities for cases involving probabilistic hauntings and with the Department of Cartographic Anomalies for impossible spatial folds. Its methodological approach influenced the later establishment of the Hall of Procedural Anomalies and the classification systems used in the Speculative Aquaria.

Its relationship to the Acoustic Anomalies archive is more tangential, though a 712 AT ruling by the Bureau of Hypothetical Durability established that hypothetically impossible sounds recorded in the latter may, under certain conditions, warrant a shadow entry in the former.
