The Aperture of Annulled Echoes

MS 5211.59 · Practices and doctrines

Definition and situation

The Aperture of Annulled Echoes is a designated combustion shaft serving as the physical access point to the Vaults of Calcined Silence. It runs vertically from Administrative Level 77-C downwards to Level -209, a fall of 286 numbered levels, and is lined throughout with Panels of Crystallized Silence installed to suppress reportage of the contents during combustion. The Aperture is the Tower's principal means of disposing of superseded Concordances, and its inventory of residue has been the subject of six separate audits, none of which has been accepted as final by the office that commissioned it.

The shaft is not a corridor and is not a room. Earlier drafts of the Third Concordance described it as a "vent," a word that was struck in the Second Recension without replacement, leaving the Aperture formally unclassified in several schedules that nonetheless assign it duties.

Structure

The Aperture's mouth on Administrative Level 77-C is an unglazed opening 3.4 metres across, set flush with the corridor floor and marked by a kerb of unpolished slate. Visitors are advised that the kerb is load-bearing for the surrounding flagstones and should not be used as a seat; the seating nearby is adequate, and three stools were provided in the winter of the Year of Ash Revisions for the use of the attending clerks.

The crystallized lining begins 1.1 metres below the mouth and continues without interruption to the terminus at Level -209. The Panels of Crystallized Silence are replaced on a rolling basis by the Scriptorium of Slow Repairs, on a cycle of approximately nine years, though the replacement programme has been reported as "in progress" for considerably longer than nine years in each of the last three Concordances examined. The panels are deliberately non-reflective; a reflective panel installed in error during the Year of Ash Revisions returned a clerk's own voice to them for four days before removal, an incident catalogued separately in Procedural Echoes.

Function

The Aperture is where superseded documents go. Under Third Concordance, Schedule 12, materials annulled by amendment are to be delivered in bulk to Administrative Level 77-C and committed to the shaft, from which they descend by draught to the Vaults of Calcined Silence for calcination. The Bureau of Epistolary Echoes holds that this delivery chain is exempt from the triplicate authorization it otherwise requires for transit apertures, on the grounds that the Aperture is not a transit aperture. This position has been challenged twice and upheld twice, most recently by a Librarian whose name the record does not give.

The Vaults themselves receive, in addition to ash, a quantity of material that has not fully combusted. This is not regarded as a fault. The Cremation of Spent Policies is understood to be incomplete by design, and the residual fragments are catalogued at Level -209 with the same care afforded to whole documents.

Disputed classification

The Aperture's status as an aperture rather than a stairwell remains contested. The archives of expeditions that walked the length of the shaft in the Year of Ash Revisions — including the one that returned with an inventory of seventeen steps, an inventory of none, and an inventory of "steps as previously reported" — are stored in the Sighing Vaults alongside the logs of phenomena later annulled. The disagreement matters because a stairwell would fall under the maintenance jurisdiction of the office responsible for the Granite Plaza of Unheard Echoes, while an aperture falls under the Bureau. The office at Administrative Level 77-C has, since the dispute began, continued to send its repair requests to both.

A minority reading, advanced in an unpublished recension attributed to a clerk of the Scriptorium of Slow Repairs, holds that the Aperture and the Aperture Γ-7 are the same structure recorded twice at different altitudes. This is generally dismissed, though the dismissal itself has never been entered into a Concordance.

Annulled Induction and terminal events

Subjects carrying a Provisional Designation Number that have undergone Annulled Induction are, in the second stage of that terminal event, delivered to the Aperture. The induction and the delivery are recorded as a single event for statistical purposes and as two events for scheduling purposes, a distinction that has produced recurring discrepancies in the annual returns. The discrepancy is noted, corrected, and noted again each year without any recorded decision as to which figure is correct.

"The shaft receives what is no longer to be cited. That it also receives what was never cited is not a matter for the Aperture."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

Access

Access to the mouth on Administrative Level 77-C is unregulated. Access to the Vaults of Calcined Silence at Level -209 requires triplicate clearance, but the clearance is granted by an office whose door is on a floor with no number, and applicants report waiting times ranging from an afternoon to "unrecorded." The Panels of Crystallized Silence suppress not only sound but also the record of what has passed through; consequently the Aperture is one of the few structures in the Tower about which the archive can state its dimensions with confidence and its throughput not at all.
